Ladies and Gentlemen,
As we approach the start time for boardgamegeek.CON, we've decided to set-up a 'slightly' more formal volunteer schedule. We are going to keep the library open later, and open earlier. But this requires a bit more manpower... As such, please reply to this thread if you're interested in taking a shift. Also please note what time or times would work for you. I (or a duly designated representative) will contact you with the exact time of your shift. Thanks everyone for making this con my favorite con...

Re: Con Volunteers
Hi Derk,
I will be happy to assist in anyway possible. Sean & I will arrive mid-day wednesday and are departing sunday afternoon. While I can't offer his services (I think he's already fully booked with wargames anyways), I can help out any or all mornings needed. The earlier, the better. Thanks for providing such an amazing gaming experience!!!

How long is a shift?

I have the schedule laid out in hour blocks. However, I don't think I can accept your application, Marshall. You need to be out there collecting intel for your next cut of the BGG.con Guide.

Re: Con Volunteers
Am I already on a list somewhere? My previous instructions were look for the loud, bald guy.
I have an understanding of how the library works but since this is my first time attending I haven't actually seen it so it's entirely possible that what's in my head and reality are completely different (which is not exactly unfamiliar to me...)
But it's only an hour shift. What could possibly go wrong?
(Does anyone else hear maniacal laughter in the distance or is that just another one of the voices in my head?)
In terms of scheduling I don't have any agenda at this point so put me down for whenever with the caveat that I'm not a morning person so if it's an a.m. shift it better start with a 12.
I can take one shift per day if it comes to that but with 700+ attendees I'm hoping you'll have plenty of other volunteers.

Wednesday helpers are usually just drafted along the way, but I'll take any help I can get for set-up/take-down. I'm mostly looking for library people in this thread.

Re: Con Volunteers
Sadly my current odds of attending have dropped to about 50/50 since my house fire last spring has cleaned me out of vacation and run up the bills on my credit cards.
However... I do still have a paid membership and the hotel reserved so I am not giving up hope yet.
Anyway... If I get there I will be happy to put in one 3-4 hour block in the library at some point during the Con. I need a big break about once per day to chat and meet people anyway. Being in the library one day will be more fun than just wondering around. Mid-afternoons or late night are best for me. I am often up until 3-4 am at BGG. I will be arriving Wed and staying though Mon.
I will let you know how things look by Mid-Oct.

Re: Con Volunteers
I have had the distinct honor of being invited to help with the library the last two years, and I had such a great time getting to meet so many people excited about board games, that this year I would like to again volunteer for BGG Con library duty for a couple of one hour shifts. My preference is for one shift on either Thu or Fri morning, the earlier the better, and then a shift on Thursday or Friday evening on or after 5:00pm which my wife (also a Con attendee) can join me in - only specific request is that it doesn't interfere with participation in the puzzle hunt or game show.

I've had a great time working in the library. Think about it...everyone is coming and going through the library, so you can meet a lot of people. Working at the desk in the library, you're taking time to look at everyone's badge, so you'll actually be able to put names (and usernames, and avatars) to faces. You also get a lot of people wandering around, just looking for a game to play, and you can help them out by recommending something you enjoy and could work for them. It's actually very rewarding...helping out so many people, in such a short amount of time. It's second only to teaching games, in that regard.

You can put me down for a shift--morning works fine for me.

derk wrote: I don't want first timers. First timers need to enjoy their first time!! What? No. I do not accept your terms. I think actual library experience trumps noob-ness, so put me down for 1 hour, anytime is fine.
I think if I can handle bookstacks of 1.8 million books I can handle the BGG.con library for an hour.
I actually would love to work the library because
I love libraries
I love games
I love learning about games I don't know
I love meeting new people
I love helping out
Gee, this is starting to sound like the Feel the love thread.

I'll take a shift or two. I'd probably prefer a two-hour shift rather than two one-hour shifts.

I will talk to my wife about us helping out together. Sometime in the evening would be likely, since we are not likely to be awake in the morning.

EDIT: She is fine with us helping out. Now we just have to figure out when.

I'm a first-timer, too, so disqualify me if you must, but I'd be willing to take a couple of hour-long shifts (back-to-back or separate), preferably late morning or early afternoon, if I'm needed. I'd like to see how things work from both sides and suspect that I'll need a break at some point anyhow.

I'd be happy to take a shift Thursday and/or Friday. Preferably in the afternoon/evening I'll probably need a rest by that time anyways. I don't mind taking more than an hour at a time.

The library is opening earlier? Cool. Put me me down to open it each day for the first hour or two depending on how many volunteers you get.

Are you kidding? I'm totally with Nikki on this one (although her list has pretty D10s and mine just has numbers). Don't discriminate against me because I'm a BGG Con noob!
1. I actually enjoy this administrivia stuff. (I can provide references if you'd like!) 2. Seems like a great opportunity to meet people. 3. Gives me the inside scoop on what games folks are interested in. 4. caesarmom says your library system kicks ass. 5. It's only an hour so I won't even miss that time.

I'm totally with Nikki on this one Thanks for the nod (my ideas are always great, right?) but I totally get where they're coming from too. I just spent the weekend as staff of the board game room (for a non-boardgaming convention) - ran Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, closing down each night for a while, and it's easy, at a con, to forget to pace yourself and take care of what you need to do to stay rested and healthy.
There were signs everywhere reminding people to drink water and all over the forums for that con were postings telling people to not sacrifice sleep for late night hanging out.
Now of course this con was a little different from BGG. First off, there were tons of people getting more worn out in their heavy costumes, unlike BGG.con (catsuits don't count ) and second, there were something like 7000 people there, so the scale is a little different, but you can take the lessons from one to the other.
My biggest foible was in not realizing that I wouldn't be able to help close the room at night (1, 2 am) and then help open in the morning (9:30 ish). Duh.

Was this con in Seattle? If so I used that room a lot.

I wish I was at PAX! No, this was NDK, anime convention in Denver.
