I only got the game a couple of days ago and so far have just been setting up the board and having a few solo trial runs using 3 player pawns.
"Player 1" had a survivor in his starting hand and an extra gun. The gun was played on the survivor. During the course of the game player 1 had left his own house - the survivor was left alone in that house when the zeds broke down the barricades. Now, assuming that at the end of Player 2's turn he wanted to move the zeds into player 1's house, I believe I'm correct in thinking that Player 1's survivor would attempt to kill the zeds at NO ACTION COST due to the survivor REACTING to the infestation.
HOWEVER... Back up a little to where the zeds are stood outside Player 1's house. Player 1 would need to spend an action to have his survivor shoot at the zeds because they are one square away, correct?
Thanks Diff.

Firing as a defensive action outside of the normal turn order is always free.
Not so sure about the other bit though- it doesn't say anywhere that survivors left in a building on their own can take pot shots at zombies outside as actions during your turn. Actions almost always involve your playing piece doing something...you CAN have survivors that you have placed with your character shoot on behalf of the character, but I was under the impression that once played into a building the survivor becomes strictly defensive. But hey, if you want to do it the other way it's up to you!
On a different note you need to get the updated rules from TCI's official site- it makes the rules a lot easier to follow and answers a lot of questions left by the base rules.

Per the expanded rules, a Survivor may not initiate combat, except to fire at anyone entering the house the Survivor currently occupies. So, the Survivor cannot shoot at zombies outside of the house, but can shoot at zombies or players that enter the house. This does not cost an action.
This also means that a survivor that is with a player cannot begin a shootout with zombies or other players, unless they enter the house the Survivor is in. So, a player with a Survivor posse cannot go attacking other players with the Survivors. However, if attacked, the Survivors can fight back.
