Hi:

Who published the first edition of Balderdash? I've seen several conflicting claims. I have a copy that's (c) 1984, published by TSR, Inc. But most sites I've read claim that Mattel was the publisher. Can anyone clear this up?

Cheers,
Jim Lowder

The description on the game page says that Mattel didn't publish it until 1986.

The description doesn't mention 1986, unless I'm missing something.

Do we have first publisher listed anywhere?

Thanks,
Jim

The description on the game page says, "Versions of the game actually called The Dictionary Game go back at least as far as 1971, although Balderdash itself was not published until 1984.

Mattel republished Balderdash in 2006 in a form that derives its gameplay from the sequel Beyond Balderdash."

There are a couple 1984 editions on eBay at the moment, one credits Parker Brothers, two credit Gameworks Creation, so that seems to make at lease 3 people publishing it in 1984.

Gameworks Creations were the copyright holders for the rules, not, I believe, the publishers. I've seen the following listed in various places as the 1984 publisher:

Games Gang
Mattel
Parker Brothers
TSR, Inc.

[EDIT: add Western Publishing Co. to that list of possible 1984 publishers.]

For such a high-profile game, you'd think the history would be easier to find!

Cheers,
Jim

Looks like my copy is from 1984.

The copywright says Gameworks Creations Inc. 1984.

It also says "Manufactured in the U.S.A. under license from The Canada Games Company Limited to The Games Gang, Ltd. and Western Publishing Co., Inc. The Games Gang, Ltd. New York, N.Y. 10010, Distributer."

Thanks, very helpful. So it looks like Western may have been the first US edition, at least.
