First, let me start by saying I am total jock and always have been. I was a college athlete and am now a high school baseball and football coach. I say this not to brag, but rather to explain that the people I am usually associated with want nothing to do with board games.
I have spent most of my life with 2 totally separate groups of friends. The Geeks I play boardgames with, and the jocks who don't know I own over 100 games.
I have attempted many times to convert one of my jock friends over to the geek side, but have failed miserably. I have worked with the same coaching staff for 4 years now and have not managed to organize one single game of anything. While I have worked on several coaching staffs in my career, this staff is especially "non-Geeky." I had given up all hope of ever showing off my collection.
Now lets fast forward to this last weekend. My wife and I had spent the entire week packing for a visit to my in laws, (yay!). We have a 6 month old son so packing is quite a chore. We left early Saturday morning and about half-way thru our drive my I-phone chimed letting me know I had an new email. The email was from FED-EX, letting me know that Zopp,(which I had totally forgotten about ordering in all the hustle and bustle), had finally arrived.
The usual giddiness of getting a new game was completely ruined by the fact that my sprinkler system (complete with a broken sprinkler head that covers the front porch in water), would soon be turning on. I pictured getting home and finding a dripping wet package with my ruined copy of zopp.
So I called my neighbor across the street who also happens to coach with me. He was somewhat familiar with my board game obsession because of all the coaches I work with, I had tried to convert he and his wife most of all.
I told him about my situation and asked if he would pick up the package for me and if I could come by and get it later. He said sure of course, and asked what it was. I was reluctant, but I hoped to gain his curiosity, so I told him it was a board game. He laughed at me and called me a dork. So I figured I had struck out again.
My wife and I had a wonderful visit with my inlaws, , and we drove home a little later than we had hoped. I figured my neighbor was asleep, but the glee of my new game got the best of me so I texted him at midnight. He texted back and said they were awake but I couldn't come get my game because they were playing it.
I immediately thought he was messing with me, so I texted back and asked "well then whats the game called?" Two seconds later, he texted back and said "ZOPP!!!!" I was stunned. I ran across the street and noticed there were about 5 cars parked in front of his house. I heard a huge commotion as I got to his front door so I knocked and just walked in.
To my amazement, my neighbor, along with 5 of the other coaches I work with, were huddled over the kitchen table playing my game.
My neighbor said that his curiosity got the best of him so he and his wife opened my game. They began to play, and had so much fun they called our friends and coworkers to play. We basically played all night long.
This incident has apparently opened the flood gates. My coaching buddies came over my house today to play again. After a few games of zopp, we played a little Crokinole, Pitchcar, Tumblin Dice, and Ticket to Ride.
The seed has been planted... (diabolical laughter)

Yeah,
On the other hand "We're playing your board game, having a great time, and we didn't invite you."
Glad this worked out well. I'm working at converting my neighborhood. I've head the most success starting with the younger more mallable minds in the neighborhood. I'm trying to get a game of Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition set up. But in the meantime, whenever the wife across the street takes off, the husband sends his son over to see if I want a 'playdate'. So far I've got them hooked on Galaxy Trucker, Descent: Journeys in the Dark, and Dominion.

Love this game! Everyone I have shown it to, no matter how cool and ungeeky they think they may be, is unable to resist the temptation to play it once they see it in action.
The strategy is deeper than you would think at first glance. And it has a good bit of physical skill to it so its a winner for everyone.
