After giving the expansion an initial go, I found myself wondering about the action cards. Overall I disliked them, because a lot of subtle manipulation to build and grow corals can now be undone with a single card. It felt like jamming a screwdriver into a finely tuned clockwork, although I will admit to enjoying some of their options (getting free tiles, for example). Anyway, while mulling over the game I played, I found myself wondering whether anyone has tried playing without them, or, phrased more precisely, using them solely for blue shrimp movements. The point of this variant would be to emphasize the increased maneuvring options on the coral reef boards without any weird and random interjections.
In practice the equivalent would be to have 12 chips in a general supply which the player could obtain as if they were cards. The same limits apply so that a player may not have more than three at any one time. If he wanted to eat his first coral, or move a blue shrimp, he'd have to return one of the chips to the supply.
Does this idea make any sense?

Well, I haven't bought this expansion yet, nor played it. But when I was looking at the elements in this expansion, I was also concerned about the impact the cards can have, and they do look like something I wouldn't enjoy, but I'm interested in the rest of the expansion, so I'm eagerly awaiting the other responses

I think that you could likely still have them burn a polyp tile to place/move a blue shrimp and also use the crown of thorns variant listed in the rule book, scratching the cards completely.
This game contains plenty of random just through player action as part of the base. I just bought this yesterday -- and I could see the cards going either way: adding way too much random and being fun OR adding way too much random and being completely frustrating.
