I'd like to share the following story:

Back in the early 90s, I was a self-published board game designer with only a few credits. I designed a game, Age of Exploration, which covers a period -- the early exploration of the New World -- that Richard Berg had covered before (and much more besides) in his very well received Conquistador.

Various production glitches had delayed the printing of Age so that it was two weeks late for Origins that year. We flew in 48 hand assembled copies, so that we could get the game in the hands of some players and take pre-orders. Richard showed up at our booth and his enthusiasm and interest in seeing another designer's take on a very difficult to handle historical subject was palpable. I thanked him for Conquistador, gave him a copy of Age, and watched him head off with no small amount of trepidation for what he would say about my game.

Richard played and reviewed it for his BROG newsletter. His review (you can download it from his site here) was the funniest, kindest, most generous, and most thoughtful review I have ever received. He understood and got exactly what I was aiming for with my design, even if I hadn't quite managed it and my execution was a bit sloppy.

As a fellow creator, I salute Richard for his enormous output, vast range, and sustained creativity. It's a tremendous achievement.

And, for that review, after all these years, I am still very, very grateful. Thank you, Richard.

I am by no means a war-gamer, but my foray into Berg games has been through Men of Iron, Volume I: The Rebirth of Infantry. I have only played a few scenarios, but it has been a great learning experience. I appreciate the depth of history that is captured by the design. Hopefully I will get to enjoy many more such games.

Cheers,

Giles.

I was 12 years old when War of the Ring came out and it educated me on more gaming concepts than I can ever enumerate. (I was already a Tolkein scholar). Gondor, Sauron...just wow.

For that and so much else, my hat goes off to Mr. Berg.

My thanx to you Tom, for such nice comments . . .and for what is really an under appreciated game design (AGE...) I try to steal from it regularly . . .

Kind of disappointed they kaiboshed that rather strange thread that was running . . . i would like to have maintained some form of discourse with that unhappy gamer.

Then crush him with leftover tacos.

Richard I read an interesting article (which I can't find now) about your work on Panzergruppe Guderian. Thank you for that ( and of course Jim Dunnigan) and many other great games!
