Besides Metro being older, is their any major differences between the two games, any new or additional portions with Cable Car? Has anyone played the two games, which one is preferred?

Cable Car comes in a much bigger box

Seriously, though, it includes the pieces for playing an expansion that uses stocks. This includes four differnt stock values in 8 different colors and an additional two colors worth of pieces. The other big difference is that the pieces are drawn in an orthogonal projection to show their proper orientation instead of the red arrows (and a top down view). If you play the variant that allows any orientation of the pieces, I imagine that this would then look odd.
As for the box, if I remember correctly it is a Shogun/Wallenstein size footprint but not as thick. It is way too big for the contents.
As for the actual gameplay of the expansion, it is an interesting diversion. I think that it is available as a free download from the designer's site. It really shouldn't be all that much trouble to scrounge the necessary pieces to play on a copy of Metro.

So would you guys suggest Metro or Cable Car?

I already own Metro and was thinking of getting Cable Car just for the expansion. Now that I've played it, I won't be picking it up. (The size of the box doesn't help either, and I'm not usually one to care about box size.) I will, however, probably be making the expansion to add to my metro set.
Overall, unless you just really want a professionally produced version of the expansion, I would go with Metro. Metro is also smaller and likely cheaper than Cable Car will be. I would suspect, though, that Metro will not be available for much longer.

The variation is a small thing, but it's hardly rubbish. In truth, I enjoy the game significantly more with the variation in place, to the point where it's the only way I'll play it.
1) While it calls itself a stock ownership system, it's really not. It is a simple way to require you to either successfully diversify, or stealthily back a single company strongly.
2) It introduces the idea of partnerships with opponents. You may be simultaneously helping each other back one company while burying other companies that you each own. Lots of fun doing that.
3) It adds a two addition options to your turn. Additional to your turn tile play options, you now have two stock exchange options. These give you ways to improve your position when your tiles won't.

without the expansion for Cable Car is the base game the same as Metro, 60 tiles and trying to connect to the center for bonus points?

I have Metro and I´ve recently purchased Cable Car because the new tiles looked way better!
However, even though the game really gained much in its appearance, with the projections of the houses and buildings, I think that it lost in easiness to see the continuous paths of each track. Metro's tracks are much easier to see than SFCC's in my opinion. I'm seriously considering selling my new game and sticking with the old one...

If you have any tips on how to make a workable "Cable Car" expansion for Metro, I'd appreciate your input. I recently bought a copy of Metro as a souvenir from a trip to Paris, so I'd love to keep this version but try it with the stocks variant,
