If the gold is on the river space, just one food. If the gold is on a non-river space, you need a timber to run water from the river space to the non-river space, then one food.
Needless to say, you need one food for EACH gold chip you take.

They are grey tokens, which means they are mountain gold, so you must pay one timber & one food.

If there is not a mine on the tile (can't remember for sure), then YES.

If I remember correctly. You only build mines on the mine tiles. If the gold is in the river. You pay 1 food to take it. If the river gold is in land. Then you need to pay a wood to build a canal to connect it to the river. On your following turn. You can then take the in land river gold for 1 food.
At least that was my take on the game and how I have played it.

Bill, the tile in question is pictured below... it's the end of the river tile.
OK, it's hard to see, but it's the best I could come up with. The tile is in the upper left hand corner of the picture.
As you can see, the terrain is "mountain" with a mountain gold (grey) symbol on it. There is no mine on the tile.
In order to excavate the gold, you would need to place a mine (shovel/timber/food) and then 1 timber & 1 food for each gold chip you excavate.

Ahhhhh ok I see now. I haven't come across that tile yet in playing the game, so this is good to know. Thanks for the update. This game is so much fun.

It's always the last tile on the river... it doesn't come out randomly. Unless you've been ending each game with one player getting 10 gold chips & going back to the "buying hut," you should have seen it.
A couple of reasons you might not have:
- accidentally mixed in with the other triangle pieces - haven't been expanding the river when you are (a) on the intersection next to the river, or (b) on the intersection one space away from the river. (b) is probably the problem.
It's well worth printing down the extensive FAQ posted here on the Geek. We found a couple of things we were playing incorrectly.

Yea I just recently pick up the game and have only had a few plays at it so far and in all of the plays thus far someone has always made it back to the trade station with 10 gold. I'm looking forward to more plays in hope of running the river a bit longer.

OK, Bill - I've got one other potential rules misfire for you, then...
You have to have 10 gold CHIPS, not ten gold nuggets, in order to go back to the trading post. In other words, you need to have ten little circles in your gold "pouch" in order to win.
This was a really common mistake when the game was first released - in fact, it soured some folks on the game unfairly because there wasn't any reason to build mines & prospect for mountain gold if the game was going to be over that quickly.

Yup, that's how I played it. I just wasn't thinking clearly when I typed it out. Thanks for bringing it up though, as I would hate to mislead anyone reading this.
