Wonderful!
I never knew about those wild animals waiting at the borders. Much more visual than the abyss.

Yes but were any PLAYMOBIL® models hurt during the making of this review? Don't make me call in PETPM.
Neat idea for a game with a simple format and slim rules.

I am pleased to report that no PLAYMOBIL® models, human or animal, were injured during the making of this review. The BGG Imperial Reviewers Legion works closely with highly-trained stunt coordinators to ensure completely safety on set. (Although, it must be noted that the Emperor once again sprained a muscle in his hand trying to raise a non-existent thumb.)

Where's the "accidentally caught on an endless loop mistake that causes death by starvation" scene? Come on! This happens at least once a game.

I thought it was pseudo-Chinese, not pseudo-Japanese. Also, I disagree with the "practically no strategy" comment. The game can have a good deal of strategy to it, especially if played with cutthroats.
Great review!

The artwork is more Chinese-influenced, I suppose, but the word "tsuro" itself is Japanese. If it was Chinese it would probably be "dao", which is already associated with another generic Asia-themed game. And yes, the game does have some strategy - I, personally, am an adherent of the "stay the heck away from everybody else for as long as possible" strategy.

I'll have to double check my edition at home, but I recall the fabricated backstory was about discovering the game in China. Certainly, it doesn't make a bit of difference either way - it is merely giftwrapping on the game.
A couple points of strategy I tend to stick with: use up the symmetrical tiles in your hand as soon as feasible, and avoid ending your path at the edge of a space that an opponent is at.

You are officially AWESOME! Everytime I hear about the stupid "endless loop" thing, I just wonder - why? Why!?! Why do people think this is possible?
Thank you so much for this post, I am totally bookmarking it.

We send "gateway" or "grabber" games to our relatives each Christmas. I hunt for games attractive enough that they will entice non-gamers to play occasionally, even with no resident gamers to lead them. This fall I chose Tsuro. I think it was a good choice for our purpose. Bought a box of four on eBay for $12 each including shipping. Still in stores but apparently orphaned.

Can I get a CD of all your reviews for my non gaming civilian friends and for my not quite yet gaming citizen 3 year old. These are fantastic. Quit your job and do this full time, you can eat off of GG right?

I never knew this was such a hot-button issue until I started exploring the Tsuro boards. It has never come up in any of my plays. I find it incredibly amusing, though.

Ooooh don't I wish. It's certainly a more attractive career path than the one I'm on now.

I haven't seen a loop happen, but the following is based on true conversations with less topologically minded players.
Noob: What if I get in a loop?
Helpful player: You can't have a loop.
N: But here's a loop on the board right now.
H: You're not on that loop.
N: But what if I was?
H: Then you made a mistake. You can't be on a loop.
N: But what do I do when I am on one?
Smartass (me): You go back to the spot where you entered the board and follow the path from there.
H: Uhhh.... Yeah right. That what's you have to do when someone gets in a loop.
N: Shouldn't I start at the different spot?
H: [chuckle] No it has to be the same spot.
N: If I start at the same spot, won't I be back in the same loop?
H: You can't have a loop.
S: If you can trace a path from that starting spot into the loop three times, you win the game.
H: [chuckle] That's right.
S: But it has to be the same loop. I can't be three different loops.
N: Huh?
H: He's just messing with you. You won't have a loop.
S: And we have to take a picture.

A review that accomplishes three things:
1) gives a succinct opinion of the game (which is the point of a review IMHO) without mindlessly regurgitating the rules,
2) can be read and digested easily in a minute or two at most (not counting slow load times for the broadband-challenged among us), and
3) is entertaining and not snarky...
Best. Review. EVER.

I offered your kind thumb to Centurion Maximus. He declined it, insisting that he was just doing his duty and that he is too set in his ways to start using these new-fangled "opposable digits". However, I suspect he was secretly pleased by your affirmation - I caught him preening in his helmet's reflection when he thought nobody was looking.

Um, perhaps a word of warning to the Playmobil Legion: this game is pseudo/Japanese and in reviewing it I noticed that there were not any Japanese soldiers on the board. That is because they have Ninjas... which remain in hiding until they attack. Perhaps you were luck to escape this time from their grasp...
