Not experienced with AoS expansions, I must ask: what is a virtual link? The rules says one exists directly between the two detroit locations on their shared hex side, costing 2 bucks.

Does that mean that a player can use one of his 3 track lays to put a train in that spot, counting as a link for deliveries? Does that occupy the spot (as in "only one player can do it, it fills up the space)?

Correct on both counts. Also, it counts as a link for scoring purposes.

It's effectively a virtual piece of track that exists between the two Detroit locations that can be purchased for $2 by one person and then used for delivering as normal. In the end game scoring it is worth 1 VP (same as if it was one piece of track).

I should have explained this a bit more fully, I'm falling into the trap of assuming that people who buy my expansions have played earlier ones that use the mechanic. Apologies.
