In this situation, who is leading? Blue or Red?

Red moves first because it is in the same sector as blue and closer to the tree.

What Matt says :-)
One of the more difficult problems in race games is how to manage the corners. We wanted to keep the ostrich footprints as we liked the idea of following a trail. The alternative was to make a grid with spaces (like Snow Tails) but we wanted to do somethng different. Having decided to keep the footprints we needed to solve the problem of who was in the lead when going around corners.
Because the game is quick and fast we needed a solution that was easy for players to immediately see who is in front. Breaking the corners down into 3 distinct areas works well and also added a slight strategic element in deciding what lane to be in.
Add in the tree mechanism, and the result is a fast way of determining who is in front around corners.
The only downside to this is that occasionally it is slightly counterintuitive (see the picture). However, this is far outweighed by the benefits :-)
Have fun and don't forget to block :-) Thanks also to Matt for answering :-)
Cheers,
Gordon
