Target sells a 12oz pack of RoseArt clay for $0.92. There are only four colors (red, blue, green, and yellow), but there is enough clay in the pack to make your own orange (red+yellow) and purple (red+blue). It's an oil based modeling clay, so it's very nice to work with and shouldn't dry out.

Also, a 10-pack of Play-Doh can be had for under $3 at Target. I used that to replace my dried-out clay.

You could also try to reanimate your original clay with a bit of water and some hours of sitting time. The possibly ten-year-old clay in the (in shrink) copy I acquired yesterday seems to be absorbing it really well and has already gone from rock-hard to kinda squishy. The problem is apparently that the little tubs are not airtight.
