I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the RE expansion would make the game playable for 5 players (there was even a 5th shrimp space on the RE open sea board). Did this fall by the wayside? Is there yet another expansion planned?

Not to my knowledge. The fifth space on the open seas board is for the blue shrimp, which is not a player color.

ahh....I love the smell of a stack of sketchily placed animals in the morning!

I think you would need another board to do so, plus more corral tiles, etc. There is one "rock" (board) per player.

Another board, more pieces I would assume. However, this game with 5 would be highly chaotic. It terribly chaotic with 4, so 5 would be worse. I think this game shines with 2 and 3.
