It is extremely high praise to say that after 100+ plays, a given game loses its luster. I have many games that don't take much longer than Dominion that have only seen 5 or fewer plays.
Nice review.

Thanks for the thumbs and comments, everyone. I must say I particularly enjoyed setting up the shuffling mishap frame - something I can personally relate to.

I have 50 plays under my belt at the moment and find that the base set by itself is starting to get a bit stale, but even so... at the price I paid for it that's less than a dollar a play, making it one of the best purchases in my collection.

Another thing that's fair to say is that even base cards dramatically change when adding expansion cards to the mix. Even if the first 25 are getting stale, when you play with the 50 of base + expansion you're already putting life back into already "boring" cards (imho).

Thanks for another wonderful review by the Legion. Although I'll also agree with previous comments that "Dominion ceases to be interesting after hundreds of plays". I'd be interested to know how many other games even get close to hundreds of plays, let alone being criticised for being stale.

So how does "freshness" scale with the number of cards available? If the base set goes stale after, say, 100 plays, how long does it take base set + Intrigue to go stale? The number of cards goes from 25 to 50 but the number of card combinations goes from just over 3 million to just over 10 billion. I don't imagine it scales at either extreme.

Yes indeed, very good point! In fact, I was massively impressed with Intrigue, which meshes so seamlessly with the base set. It doesn't add any new mechanics and doesn't do anything fancy, but completely revitalises the original cards. The only downside being that I don't want to play without it now, but don't own it yet...
I haven't played with Seaside yet, but it's only a matter of time before someone in my Dominion circle breaks down and gets it.

Can you really play this in an hour or less?

Definitely. My friend and I usually play twice during our lunch hour. Sometimes games take longer if there are new cards in play that you're not familiar with, or if everyone is experimenting with bizarre card combos, but I have never had games run over an hour, even with three or four players.

Absolutely.
With experienced players, even in a 3-4 player game, I'll find that hands can usually flow fast enough that most people are playing their hand in 5-15seconds, and delay happens most often when it gets back around to my turn before I've finished re-shuffling my deck. So, yeah, 15-20 minute games definitely happen.
Now, sometimes you can get a really slow setup, and things will drag -- I've hit one really punishing Intrigue setup, where hands just kept degenerating in quality, and the game might have stretched to an hour -- but it was an outlier.
