Each of the following counts as one action:
- each step from outside into a tower,
- each step from one field (also from a tower) into a
neighboring field,
- each step per field while running over occupied fields.

I'm confused by the rules relating to movement in this game. if the above are all true does it follow that movement within a room in which there is no other mouse is not counted as an action, so it costs one action to enter a 2x2 room but no more actions to move to the diagonally opposite corner, provided there are no other mice in the room? or would it cost a total of three actions, one to enter the room and one for each orthagonal 'step' required to reach the diagonally opposite corner?

Rooms are mentioned nowhere in the movement rules. Rooms are only important for removing and replacing the roofs. Each space you walk on counts as an action.

The second. Replace the word "field" with "square" or "space" and you have it just about right. "Field" does not equate to "room"

The only difference there should be between rooms with mice in and rooms without is that a room with a mouse in is already revealed, so it does not take an action to lift the roof off.

You can take my game… when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the board!

I had the exact same confusion so you are not alone! "Fields" was a poor choice of words to say the least.

It's all quite wordy for what comes down to "Each space moved counts as an action, even the towers and when moving through other mice."
