I've played 3-player twice and found it too rich to be interesting.
I'd like to know what you mean by rich in this context. Is it simply that everyone ends up with more money?
As to the original question, after a few games with 4, a couple with 5 and a 3-player game where I taught both opponents I definitely prefer 4-player games. As to the 3 or 5 I'd prefer to play with just 3 compared to 5 because of the extra time introduced. It seems to me that with 5 there's going to be more time added than just the extra person taking turns. Far more warehouses seemed to get knocked off the tracks into the middle delaying the game if people went to the effort or replacing them.
3-players games in 90 minutes should be possible once everyone knows the game, I think the game I taught was close to that and I'm not quick with explanations.
