We played it for the first time two weeks ago and it also came up. I was playing as the zombie player and my son as a hero asked 'hey dad I can shoot the meteorite space and have a chance to hit it and the zombies, right?'. 'Sure son'
I think it was a 10 second discussion.
But, for your discussion, the meteorite rules say it's targeted like a zombie. The shotgun shoots a space and you roll for each zombie if you hit.
