So after hunting down the "Mutant Kit" and the "Dessert Hive" packs I gave this bad-boy a go.

Took me a good 2hours to cut everything out and I read through the rules about 3 times (did this every night before bed).

So after I felt I kinda knew what I was doing I made some Mutants and headed into the Hive...(insert omimous music).

My first bug was venemous, had a termite head (could spray out entangling posoin), scorpions claws + stinger, two legs and wings.

My side kick was an armored (hard to hurt) mutant with a spider head (that bites), praying mantis claws, two sets up jumping legs, and big earwig abdomen that has some huge a$$ pinchers.

We were young, foolish and ready to take on the world/hive.

I started off in the Root Cellar and draw from the Hive Deck. I draw 3 bugs to fight.

Praying Mantis: This guys huge. Like 3 times both my Mutants size. He can fly and if he gets ahold of me can do some serious damage.

Assassin Bug: He's my size but can shoot out his butt for big damage and has a poisonis bite.

Riparian Earwig: This guys is small and slow but has a huge Pincer that has me pretty worried.

Since my guys arent too fast or bright the bad guys go first.

The Praying Mantis flies right infront of my armored Mutant. The Assassin Bug moves forward and lines himself up for a projecter shot.

The slow earwig shambles over too far to attack.

Being the expert Bug Tactician that I am, I have my Armored Mutant leap over the mantis. I get out of the line of fire from the assassin and am set up to attack the Mantis from behind.

I slip my Venomous Mutant just outside the Mantis’s claws and get my projector ready.

Because of my positioning none of the enemy bugs can attack. That means its hurtin time for my Mutants. My armored guy starts things off and takes a huge chunk out of the Mantis crushing his wings and legs with his giant pinchers. My Venomous Mutant fires away spewing acid on his head and claws. The Mantis keels over as the acid eats away at his simmering noggin.

Now it’s the enemies turn to move again. The Assassin scoots closer and line himself for a shot from his projector. The earwig plows into my Armored mutant and latches on.

I luckily pass an instinct roll (to get out of the hex with the Earwig) and get behind him setting up for a rear attack.

I keep my Venemous guy where he is (he has a clear shot to the Earwig).

Only the Assassin is eligible for attack and lands a nasty shot on my Armored guy. Despite his armor he is hurt bad as his limbs are fried from the blast. He rolls over limbless and unable to move.

Seeing my chance my Venomous Mutant unloads his remaining venom spraying the Assassin. I land big damage and melt his limbs to a crisp. As the round ends the vemon creeps up to his head and he falls over dead.

Now its just me and the Earwig. **Tumbleweeds roll by as we face off across the hive.

He barrels into me and grapples, looking to tear me apart with his pinchers. I try to escape but my poor instinct roll wont let me.
He rips into me tearing off my wings and legs.

I cant move but garsh-darnit I can still fight!! I use my scorpion claws for some payback rip his legs to shreds. (How’s that feel buddy?!!!)

So we are both unable to move and are locked in a bug-battle-to-the-death (which I think would be great name for Insect 2).

His turn is up again and he takes a chunk out of my head with his pinchers. I lash out with my scorpion tale but I roll a crap damage die and do no damage.

On his next turn the Earwig chomps down on my head again ripping it clean off. As I fall over dead my poor limbless Armored Mutant glances over nervously knowing he is next.

So I had a blast here. I was soooo close to surviving this room. It came down to one bad roll and I was history. It is always a good sign when I lose and still want to come back for more.

As a solo gamer, I can highly recommend this little gem. Try and hunt one down before they sell out.

btw Assassin Bug, Praying Mantis, and Riparian Earwig is probably the meanest first-draw lineup i've ever seen... and i've played alot of Insecta.

Some minor points, technically once a bug's insect limbs are all torn off it is incapacitated and only allowed to attack if it's an automatic hit. Also don't forget that faster bugs can "hesitate" instead of moving, allowing them to effectively move last. If the Mantis is faster than you, you'd better keep your abdomen facing a wall... otherwise he's going to get a -1 accuracy die rear attack and cut you in half. Lastly when using a poisonous naseutous projector i seem to recall that the damage always goes to Dexterity, though it's been awhile since i've seen one in action.

Good luck with your next hive invasion!

Ahhh. Thanks for pointing all that out. I definetly made a few rules mess ups here. Maybe I am not the master-bug-tactician I thought I was..lol.

I was wondering about the hesitating. It seems like most of the time it is a good idea to let the enemies go first so you can flank or distance yourself.

I think I would've been toasted way sooner if I played correctly. All this time I've been living a lie.

I would agree that generally hesitating is the way to go. A superfast bug with high instinct (such that it can escape bug-cohabitating hexes) is a dangerous and difficult critter to catch (see Dragonfly).

Also your armored bug should have a movement of 5 with two sets of jumping legs, which is better than the Mantis' 4... which means he can generally wait to see what the Mantis does.

With any luck next time you can cut your teeth on some wimpier morsels and grow your bugs before taking on the mighty Mantis.

Excellent report.

I have the games still in zip-lock bags and a lot of work ahead of me to play them - but this makes me want to put in the effort.

Thanks man. This game is a ton of Bug-Filled Carnage. What I love about the Mutant Creation and Hive set up is their brevity (thats my big word for the day). To prepare for the Hive game (creation, deck set up) took just under 10 minutes. *if you really mull over your Mutant it may take longer.

I too hate cutting things out but this game is totally worth it. I really hope more people start posting their sessions. Love read about this game and I also could use some rule(s) and strategic help.

I just played 2 more times and got slaughtered 2 more times. I keep drawing the friggin Dragonfly and Mantis. Next time I see either of those in real life I will squish them without any hesitation.
