If a player rolls an arrow on their first roll and chooses that movement, must they move sideways (either right or left depending on which side you are playing) or could they take a right out of the stairs and go up?

I have no official answer to this, but my interpretation would be that they can only go straight ahead (towards the side of the board) and not upwards. From the stairs, there is only one direction of movement.
