I am thinking of games like Pass the Pigs, or even two player games that are heavy on luck (press your luck) in nature fit into this category?

I don't think that a two players game can be a party game, but I think of games like Bang! or The Great Dalmuti as party games and fillers too.

Filler games sounds like an awesome subcategory.

Excuse me, I believe you have my stapler...

You've got a vote. If you think party games is the best category for them, vote accordingly. Personally, I think most of the games we refer to as "fillers" should be in the family game subdomain.

I'm of the opinion that games with strategic goals like Pass the Pigs are not party games. They are silly and fun, but not "party games" in my book. To me, it needs to be a game where the social interaction is 95% of the game. There is no interaction in Pass the Pigs.
Also, to me, the game has to be the thing. In party games, the reward is playing the game and not in scoring points of whatnot (so things like Bang and Cash n Guns are out). Those other games are fun and interactive, but the goal is money or whatnot, not to "play the game."
True party games (Balderdash, Werewolf, etc) may have scoring systems (or not), but that isn't the point of the game.

Yeah it's here! Really it's right here.

I agree party games are light games with little rules and where the 'game' is the activity and 'scoring' is secondary.
2 isn't a 'party' so, no a 2 player game really isn't a party game. Really, I'm not sure were it goes from a 'gaming' group to a party, but I'd hardly call 4 player games as party either.
Bang! and Ca$h n' Gun$ are a perfect example of something else that shouldn't exist in 'party' games. You really shouldn't have ANY player elimination, nothing kills a party quicker then someone being excluded.

Agreed! Bang, Ca$h n' Gun$, and Werewolf are not party games.
When we say "party games" we don't mean a party of hard core gamers. These are games that can be taught and enjoyed by a random group of people (meaning mostly non-gamers). You can take these games to the church picnic, to a camping trip, or to your grandmother's house for Thanksgiving. As others have said, the social interaction is the important thing. Part of this statement means there cannot be very many rules. As soon as non-gamers start hearing more than 3 rules, their brain tunes out.

You might find a party game of your liking in Essen at Spiel. Eggertspiele, usally the guys for strategic games, will bring Rummelplatz (Funfair) to the world. Up to 6 players visit some of the 8 attractions at a funfair. Each attraction is a simple and short game, lasting only minutes. You might start at Ring-The-Bell and maybe you are outed as a Thumbsucker... This collection of 8 little games is played within 30 minutes and it is be enjoyed by young and old, gamers and non-gamers alike. And it is pure fun.

Solitaire can be a party game if you do it right...

Not sure about Bang!, but Ca$h n' Gun$ seems like a good party game even with elimination, since even if someone gets knocked out, the game's fast enough and enjoyable enough to be fun for someone even if they aren't in the game any more (or at least, that's how I felt when I played it).

Pass the Pigs is a drinking game. There are people who actually play it straight?
