So, what happens when you have to place a shield, but have none to place, because all of them are already on the board.

Are you supposed to take one of your own shields from the board from some other area? that's how we played it.

I just played a game where 3 of us ran out of shields!!! Because the fighting for kingdoms have been so fierce. And we weren't even close to the end of the game, as each of us had only 3 dukes on the board, but no knights in our supply.

Has this ever happened to anyone? How did you go about further play at that time?

As soon as one player runs out of shields, the game is over. It's the placement of knights/shields that triggers the end of the game, not dukes.
I'm not sure how you could only have three dukes on the board when you ran out of shields. Every time there is a group of at least two adjacent shields on the board (even if the shields belong to different players), a duchy is formed and a duke is placed.

That should not be so hard if there are five players and they are going for some large duchies. He did say the fight for duchies was fierce. And with all knights on the board, joining duchies must have been easier. I had a five-player game just yesterday (played by the correct rules) where all but one player (me) had three or four dukes at most.

Ooops, missed that part. About half way through the game I was wondering why the rules stated to watch out for the game end, as it may come sooner than expected... That would be why.

Thanks for that.

Like I said, the fight was fierce. People didn't create duchies willy-nilly with just 2 knights left and right, but expanded the ones they already had to defend against aggressors or try to take over or take back the ones they lost previousely. So at any point in time, we never had more than 3 dukes on the board per player and sometimes even less than that.

OOPS!!! My turn for the said oops, greengow. I thought you were saying there was a grand total of three dukes on the board, not three dukes per player. Yes, nothing at all weird about three dukes per player out there: that's quite common.
