The Obnoxious Orange Things From Another Place
An Awful Green Things From Outer Space expansion
Review and Overview
By John "Omega" Williams
2010

Found careening drunkenly down a hallway we have a new expansion for the Awful Green Things From Outer Space board game by Tom Wham. Appearing in the June 2009 vol 5 issue 20 of The Crusader magazine from Troll Lord Games this is a one page addition written and illustrated by Tom Wham as well and adds a new and dangerous foe for the crew of the Znutar to battle against.
This time around the crews latest "volunteer" species reacted... *badly* when they slugged down a can of Zgwartz and promptly exploded into fragments, and/or went totally nuts!

This is presented as a single page in the magazine that you should glue to some sort of cardstock backing and then cut out. There are 24 Fragments, 20 Young, and 16 Adults.

The Orange Things come with some new setup rules.
First the Crew player must evenly divide the crew that can be on either bridge between those two locations. Next they place the 1-die Fragments marker on the Zgwarts track since the crew already knows all too well what this stuff does to the monsters!
The Monster player puts 6 Orange Thing fragments in the Mess Deck, then they take 5 Young and 4 Adults and place then one per area that is not occupied by a crewman, spreading out from the Mess Deck to adjacent rooms and sections. The Green Things are not used.
The rest of gameplay is as per normal rules except that the Orange Things do not lay eggs. Instead when an Adult "grows" it splits into 1-die of Fragments. And the Monster player can choose which Adults to fragment and which not to.

This is an interesting addition to the game and the Orange Things play simmilar yet diffrently from the Green Things such that new strategies must be developed for both sides. The Crew are both essentially out one weapon and at the same time have one less weapon to worry about which one is going to make the things fragment. The adult Orange Things have one less life cycle than the Green Things and are 1 point less resiliant to damage. But are 1 point faster and hit harder.

Give it a try if you enjoy the original game!

The magazine can be ordered either direct from the Troll Lord site or as a PDF from RPG.net.

Buy the PDF...more profit for Crusader Magazine, and the counters page prints out better than a photocopy!

Im not overly fond of PDFs as gaming materials. I have allmost zero printer access and that makes them useless for what I usually need from a game item. Which is the ability to transport it and read it from something other than the @#$%&*ing computer screen.

With the magazine I have the option to just cut them out and mount them.

With pdf you can print directly onto cardstock so you would not necessarily need to mount them to anything, just cut them out.

It is still pretty useless without the printer though.
