Just got this game and I have a few questions before getting it on the table.
1) Dumb question: How many "extra cubes" get placed during set up? Every player places 2 per city and then they get 2 or 3 more? I think the rules mean 2 more but the fact they say place one and then say repeat for an additional two cubes makes it a bit confusing. The "additional two" could mean after the "one more" but I am pretty certain this isn't the correct interpretation.
2) Allies: If Player B and Player C ally with the main defender Player A, are B and C Allies to each other? Can they still attack each otehr in a different city?
3) Clarification on placing troops: The MAIN attacker (or defender) can have as many differnt city troops as long as they are all controlled by the same player, correct?
4) Martin clarified that Allied attackers have to ask permission to join battle. Seemed some reluctance to that when it first came out. How do people feel about that now?
5) I have read all the possible battle outcomes in the file section and just wanted to make sure that I have it all correct in this summary: a) Winning Round 1 of Battle only gets you the first Battle Token for Round 2. b) Winning Round 2 of Battle only gets you the Location Tile; Losing as Defender drops your city's value. c) Only the Main A/D gets the above; Allies get nothing (except an ally that won't attack them and influencing the outcome of battle which may influnce the city's value) d) A Battle only occurs if Attacking units are present e) If there are only Defending units (thus no battle), the Location Tile is not awarded but instead the Main Defender places 2 influence in that city f) Loser in each round removes lowest matching unit - from the Main first, then from the Allies second
8) Alkibades: Is this played during Phase 2? Rules don't state when but I assume it is played similar to Perikles.
9) Out of curiosity, what is the maximum on Strength Points typicaly on one side of a battle? 5? 10? 15? I am wanting to make up a chart for easier reference on the A ratio but want to know how far out I should take it. Thanks!

Re:
1. Total of 2, not 3. 2. Cities (not players) on the same side in combat are allied. Note that all players must agree (a,b,c). Cities may not oppose allied cities. Cities at war may not ally. All of a player's cities are assumed to be aklied. Alliances are not transitive. 3. Yes. 4. I feel it's best as is. 5. It all sounds good, but has been awhile. 8. Alkibiades can be used at any time during your turn in the influence phase.
I personally prefer not to use the special tiles.
