A thought crossed my mind... wouldn't it be cool if a civilization could purchase ANY of the creature types! Of course you'd need some means of representing the unique creatures, but that wouldn't be difficult with a color printer and some ingenuity.

Perhaps the cost of a 'foreign' creature could be a set of 7, instead of the usual set of 6. I would think limiting a civ to 3 creatures is still a good idea. Any thoughts on how that might affect the game?

Sorry, but...no way. The centaurs are easily the most powerful of the mythological units. If you enable everybody to recruit them, then Greece's only significant advantage would be null and void. Greece would once again be relegated to the role of punching bag if the Roman player opts for an aggressive approach to the game, and that was the single biggest problem with Mare Nostrum before the expansion was released.

So, it seems that in order to keep the game balanced, the civ-specific-heroes would need to be removed.

This might result in a game with less 'flavor', but in which the players are more equally balanced.

In my view, the game is sufficiently balanced when playing with the expansion as-is. Pericles still sucks and Greece still produces little besides tax and fish, but the centaurs compensate for that.

oh yes, i agree with you that the game + expansion is balanced fine.

but, i'm trying to come up with a VARIANT in which all mythological creatures are available to every civ. your earlier comment helped me to realize that for such a variant to work, the civ-specific heroes would probably need to be removed from the game. thanks!
