I love the red box, I just got a copy about 3 months ago. I DM'ed the intro adventure for two straight-rolled characters that each had 1hp (ouch). Fun!

Now, if they could just be talked into reprinting the too-rare Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia....

This set is simply a new boxed introduction to 4th edition with the same cover as the 1984 D&D Boxed Set. Sadly we won't be finding any "Elf" class within.
Though if they are smart, hopefully we may find some references to Aleena and Bargle...

The Essentials line isn't a reprint. It's a line designed for new players, but has new material to suck money from for existing ones. Plus there's a softcover Rules Compendium which includes the D&D rules updated with the current errata. Amazon has pre-orders for the various products at under $15 a shot.
Me, I'm in for the tokens. I've never liked the cost and randomness of the miniatures line. And they've promised that published adventures will use the tiles in the two Essentials tile sets! (Yeah, I didn't like how they didn't even make miniatures for some of the creatures used in their adventures.)
WotC has taken my money yet again!

Will there also be an "expert" set? It doesn't necessarily sound to me like combining this set with the rules compendium will allow to play higher level characters.

Holy potatoes! And it looks like they're bring back one of the best parts of the Red Box: the path from intro fiction, to intro choose-your-own-adventure, to GM's adventure for a party.
I am absolutely going to pick this up. The original was a perfect template for teaching introductory roleplaying, and compared to the original D&D game the new rulesset is dead simple - it'd be hard to mess this product up. I'm certain it's going to be very good for teaching D&D... with some playtesting and some "enlightened self-interest" in the editing, it'll probably be even better.

More importantly - will we get X1: The Isle of Dread or GDQ 1-7: Queen of the Spiders?

I don't know. Somehow the marketing/packaging of this product irks me. But I try never to analyze my own biases this early on a Sunday morning . . .

The box for the 4th Ed starters set, which has been circulating on the net for months now, is sure to cause a lot of excitement as well as whining, depending on your take on the original rules. I started with AD&D but have a lot of fond memories of the original red box since it came out just a few months after I got started in RPGs. The new red box is most definitely on my Christmas list as a gift for my eight year old since it's a perfect way to invest him into RPGs and it forms a link between us since I have an original red box on my game shelf already.

There are ten products in the D&D Essentials line, of which this is the first.
Players get the Rules Compendium and one of the Heroes books, and can then get to 30th level.
I've blogged about it here: http://rpg.brouhaha.us/?p=2743

How, if at all, will this new product line be different from the existing 4e products: PHB, PHB2, PHB3, DMG, DMG2, MM, MM2, MM3, etc? Is this meant to be a "stealthy" release of 4.5e (or 5e)?

Well, László, D&D Essentials is $210 +dice versus $60 +dice.
That said, it seems like a better layout for the game. But then again, I'm an old GURPS (3rd Edition) player, my idea of the ideal game shelf is a shelf full of eight-by-eleven 196-page softcovers, a role this line would fill nicely.

The simplest way to look at the Essentials line is that it's a repackaged form of 4E (no version update but it does contain the most up to date rules with corrections). They've included some alternative builds and such, likely to try to get die hards to buy the books too, but otherwise it's all the same. The main point is that this version is aimed at the "new to D&D" crowd, whereas the PHB, DMG, etc are largely written for people already familiar with D&D. The books are smaller and cheaper quality as far as I can tell. Now, part of it might also be a money grab, since some die hards who have all of the previously released stuff will buy these too, but I really don't think that's the main point since I can't imagine it's going to net a lot of profit in the long run.

It's not a stealthy release, because everything in the previous books remains valid (although a few things might have changed already due to errata) and the PHB, DMG, MM and Essentials line will all still be produced.
It's different because it's a different pathway into the game aimed more at new players. It contains new material (powers, feats, monsters, etc.) so that it's attractive to established players, but they don't need to buy it. (My DDi-subscribing players are looking forward to the new material, and won't need to get the books).

If anything can be classified as 4.5E, it would be the substantial May 2010 rules update that's been out over a month (for free, no DDi required).

I'd love to see a combined edition 4e PH that has PH1-3 (as well as DMG 1-3 and MM 1-3) all collected in one volume each, using the classic AD&D 1st ed. artwork (represented by the PH pic in your avatar).

One could hope! I don't care if they support the game or not, I'd just love to see some reprints in the style of the excellent TSR 25th Anniversary box.

Not very much money. Not offering the PDFs any more is dumb, but a print run wouldn't come even close to profitable.
