In the situation of a battle where there is both trireme and hoplite stages of battle, in order to win as an attacker or a defender unopposed must the player place tiles for both forms of attack in order to win unopposed or just a mere presence through placement of a single tile? Furthermore, if a single tile suffices, in the situation of defense if there is an instrinic defender of one form, must the defender place a tile of the other form of battle or can it be a placement the same as the existing intrinsic defender?

You may place only one tile in one phase of battle. In order to win outright, you would have to place the tile for the 2nd phase. Other wise the battle never occurs and the city tile is removed for no effect.

YOu are not bound to place where there may be an intrinisic defender. So if it is an intrisic trireme, you may certaionly play a single hoplite, for example.

Note that unopposed defenders do not earn the tile. There are several good rules threads if you comb this forum.
