Had what I think is an interesting idea for how to play this with two players. Quite simple when you get right down to it. My wife and I played CotFL tonight using this variant and we found it to be both fun and challenging.
Basically:
(1) Set up as per the rules for a 3 player game, removing the appropriate tiles and setting up the board as shown in the rules book.
(2) Decide which player is Player One.
(3) Select a color NOT in use and take FIVE gems of that color.
(4) In turn order, each player places one of these out-of-play gems on a Hex, removing that Hex from play. Hexes chosen must be in ascending value; in other words, player one will place a gem on a value-1 hex; player two will place a gem on a value-2 hex, and so on until five gems have been placed and a value 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hex have each been taken out of play for the entire game.
(5) Player two actually takes the first turn of the game, as they placed one fewer gem during setup.
Play continues as per a normal game.

We found this made for some interesting decisions and, ultimately, my wife was able to win (by a single point) by making a blocking move which would have been otherwise impossible without this variant.
We found having five "easily conquered" hexes taken out of play increased the challenge, especially when a player placed a gem adjacent to one of the 10, 11 or 12 value hexes.
