Subject: Two player rules - confused about payday? rss

I am just learning the rules to El Capitan and I am confused about how some aspects of payday work for two players. If it’s possible to illustrate your answers with examples, I would appreciate it.

Two player rules:
1) Page 8 of the rules: “When checking for majority, neutral houses are counted as well but no money is paid for them.”

1a) What does this mean? How can warehouses be counted but yet no money be paid for them?

1b) Example: Red is my main color for warehouses and green is my neutral color. In Marseille, I own the first four warehouse spots with my red warehouses on those spots.(Twelve is on the space of the last of those warehouses.) On the next space, I have a green warehouse. The space to the right of the green warehouse is 20. Assuming I have the majority of warehouses in Marseille, what am I paid and how did you arrive at that payment?

2) Page 8 of the rules: “For largest number of warehouses, money for first rank of majority is paid only if the largest number of warehouses is of the main color of the player.”
This rule confuses me because the rule “talks” about the “largest number of warehouses” and then “first rank of majority,” the latter referring to situations in which there is a tie. So, I am not sure which situation this rule covers. I must be missing something simple. Could you please explain this rule and if possible illustrate it via an example.

3) Page 9 of the rules in the “Majority” section: “Only the color of the most warehouses is taken into account.”
What does this rule mean – “taken into account” for what?

4) Examples on page 9 – The second example (red and green warehouses) seems to imply that if there is a tie with oneself (main vs. neutral color), that player is playing against himself in terms of deciding first rank. Is this correct?

5) I can’t seem to grasp how the “neutral” warehouses affect the amount of money one gets on payday. What is the purpose of the neutral warehouses?

6) What role do fortresses play in a two player game, especially on payday?

Thanks for your patience with my questions.

I, too, am new to this game.
But here is my understanding of how this works.
When "Payday" arrives (the scoring phase) money is paid to the single player with majority and the player who is second in line. This is regardless of the number of players. It is easy to understand in the normal game (three or four players).
The only change with the 2 player version is that each player has an additional color to play.
This is not unlike many other games where each player takes the role of TWO player positions in the game.
For the purposes of scoring (payday) each of the four colors is considered.
In the cases you questioned, since each player 'controls' two different colors they are paid ONLY if their primary color has majority (or is second). But all four colors are 'considered' (taken into account; used for the calculation).
An example:
You have 6 of your primary color and 2 of your neutral color (on any particular city). Your opponent has 4 of his primary color and 5 of his neutral color.
You would be paid the amount shown on the NEXT space (for your 6 majority).
Your opponent would be paid half that amount for secondary majority (his 5). Although it was his neutral color it counts for him.

I hope this helps. Or, at least, will spur some other conversation as someone else steps in here to correct me.

Hi Thom,
Thanks so much for your response. It seems like the rules for two players are a bit different from the main rules (three or four players) and not written very clearly. I am still unsure of the answers to my questions in my original post. In your example, I am not sure the second player is payed any money. In the instructions for two players it states that, "On each payday, only the player holding the first rank for majority will be paid money." "When checking for majority, neutral houses are counted, but no money is paid for them." It's all still very confusing to me for two players.
I too hope others contribute to the discussion.
Thanks again.
Richard

I do have the same questioning about the game. We played our first game last night.

The way I see it, all of your warehouse ( main and neutral ) count as to know who has the majority.

In the event of a tie, then, we look for who first built a warehouse on the island. Main Color = money, Neutral Color = nothing.

Fortresses are there to give you money. They pay half rounded down. 2 fortresses on same island, they still pay out half rounded down each.

UNLESS they are on an island where there is the most warehouses, then they pay full amount.

theses are MY understanding of the rules.
However, my wife understands a bit differently : Neutral doesn't count in majority, they are there only to raise the level of difficulty.

for the rest, she does agree.

We might not be right... but it's better to play with the wrong rules than not play at all!

take care

-Eric

I know this is an old post, but has anyone figured out the 2 player variant? The rules for this are written so poorly it's just ridiculous. I think maybe Eric has it figured out but was wondering if anyone out there can confirm or elaborate. Also wondering if it wouldn't be easier to just skip the neutral warehouses (has anyone tried this?) Granted, there won't be as many houses in play but perhaps it would be worth it to eliminate the nonsense.
