It can really go either way. Particularly with more players, expect all sorts of crazy stuff to happen, including 2-point items being discarded due to people fighting over random silly stuff.
Nothing is that powerful, although until you've seen the scores come out at the end of the game, the value of the 1 and 2 point items probably doesn't come home properly.
