Ok. This has been puzzling me for a while now.
Id hear people with say the 70s print listing card counts wildly diffrent from what I have. I am pretty sure Im not missing any cards. A recent posting of the card list and count drew my attention to an interesting fact.

My 81 copy has about 1/2 the Monster cards. Exact same Treasure cards. But from Dungeon level 3 on the cards are exactly 1/2 of the older versions.
All the diffrent monsters are present. Just on average 1/2 the number of cards for them.

Anyone else encountered this?

Hey John,

I don't have a copy of the later ('81) version. However, I do know that the board size in the '75 version is much larger. I suspect two causes for this...

1.) The '75 version has you put 3 monster cards in each large, named chamber on the board.

2.) It's possible that the boards are slightly different (e.g.: less rooms on the smaller, later version).

Here's a breakdown on the number of rooms and large chambers on the '75 board...

1st - 9 rooms, 0 large chambers.
2nd - 9 rooms, 2 large chambers.
3rd - 16 rooms, 2 large chambers.
4th - 18 rooms, 2 large chambers.
5th - 16 rooms, 4 large chambers.
6th - 12 rooms, 2 large chambers.

Maybe you can check and see if the rooms match on your '81 version. Also, does the '81 version have you put 3 monster cards in each large chamber?

Board measures 55cm x 43.5cm (20 1/2 x 17 3/8 inches)

Nope. All rooms and chambers accounted for.
Level 1 = 9 rooms
Level 2 = 9 rooms 2 chambers
Level 3 = 16 rooms 2 chambers
Level 4 = 18 rooms 2 chambers
Level 5 = 16 rooms 4 chambers
Level 6 = 12 rooms 2 chambers

I see no mention in the rules of placing multiple monsters in chambers. Only that if you enter a chamber and someone is allready there and fighting then you have to draw a new monster, which could result in several monsters in one chamber but otherwise no diffrent.

Since the reduction is 1/2 for about all the encounter types. Im guessing they did it to cut costs in a way that would not impact gameplay. If I were actually missing monsters or had more than 1/2 the older version. I'd suspect I just got a bad print back then. But it is a very uniform reduction such that it cant be accidental.

Addendum: Also in retrospect. Having less of all monsters means you get more variety in encounters while playing, rather than the higher chance of meeting alot of the same over and over.

If I were to take a guess I would say that it stems from how the game plays. The '81 version the monster cards are in a stack that you draw from when you enter a room, and afterward the monster is returned to that stack. Due to this there do not need to be as many monster cards.

The '75 version has all treasure and monsters placed on the board before play and they are moved to the wandering monster stack after being defeated. So, therefore, you need a monster for every room plus three per chamber. The '75 version simply needs more cards to be able to play.

Personally, I prefer the '75 version in that regard.

On a related note, does the '81 version have the crystal ball and ESP medallion items?

Treasure loadout is exactly the same.

Looks like I have 9 Lightning, 9 Fireball and 6 Teleport cards. Of those I believe I'm possibly missing 1 to 3 Teleport cards.

According my rulebook here. Says the monster stays at the location till defeated. Once defeated its moved to the bottom of the levels deck.

So the Box and board are the same, and likely the card art. But the card count and rules arent.

Definitly sounds like the game was altered to accomodate a smaller card print loadout per box.

Whats the dimensions of the board on the 70s versions? I assume a bit larger if a room was meant to accomodate cards direct on the board from the start?

My guesstimate would be around 3x3 feet.

John -
you are looking at the wrong list, if you have the 80/81 version.

Here is a file with the card/component list for the 1980 version:
http://files.boardgamegeek.com/file/download/1q5cnky1tt/Dung...?

It's in the files section for this game.
