Quick question, does this expansion play as a separate game to Runebound or does the board add on the original board, ala the Talisman expansions?

Here you go. As JC says, the base game board is underneath, so the card boxes on the left and the town boxes on the right are from it. The 'map' part comes with the expansion, all new terrain:
