'Grand Canyon' is a free expansion for 'Canyon,' adding a level of complexity to a game that was really just a dolled-up version of card game classic, 'Oh Hell.' The expansion is issued through Rio Grande and probably Abacus Spiel, as well. It consists of a number of cards with inoffensive caricatures of Native Americans and a couple cards of new board counters.

The new counters consists of several islands, some fast-moving currents, and a counter for floating logs. The islands merely present more obstacles on the board. The floating logs are a movable obstruction that slows a player moving through its space. The current counters can be a help or a hindrance, depending on which direction they point, and cause a canoe to move either one or two spaces in the direction of the arrows.

The real meat of this expansion, though, is the Native American cards. These represent, I imagine, guides that can help the player pilot the canoe downstream. Each of the eight cards has its own special ability which can be used during a turn. Players choose a card from this selection at the beginning of each round, starting with the player in last place and working toward the front of the pack.

The special abilities vary greatly, from being able to leap-frog over opponents' canoes, to positioning the round marker, to positioning the floating logs, and so on. Each card presents tantalizing possibilities in different situations, and players will be hard-pressed to choose amoung them.

'Grand Canyon' should be required fare for anyone who has the base game of 'Canyon.' It takes a family game and with little in the way of new components transforms it into a true gamer's game.
