OL Avatar: Demon Prince XP: 13/13 Plot: Obsidian Shackles OL Upgrades: Sir Alric (at Grehaven), Toughened, Soul Barrier and Focused
House Rules: Divine Power – this was voted on and everyone was on the same page. Kirga Spawn Prevention: I showed the huge long thread of how Kirga’s ability works and Steve (OL) was not happy with it. He offered the house rule to how it to the open 2, where it is a radius of 5 not going through walls.
First things first, we draw a new copper treasure and get Knuckle Dragger and award to Tahlia, to pair with Shadowblade, instead of the Minor Healing, which was not taken out from our last week’s session.
Week 2 continued
Thelsvan Highway Dungeon Level 3. #65 The Butcher’s Kitchen. This is a relatively small level with encounter markers that allow you to throw knives with pierce 3, 1r2g dice. Steve (OL) began this dungeon with 6 threat and 8 cards. Steve chose the option with 4 Kobold, 2 Ferrox, 1 Master Hellhound. His intention was to land on the encounter markers and shoot at us. It was a good plan, but we never really let him. First turn Zyla switches to her Screaming Eagle Staff, takes an advanced action to take 2 of the Kobold out. This was even after Zyla was going to take 3 and do some damage to a Ferrox, but the OL wanted to replace monsters because he didn’t fully understand how Breath worked. Understandable mistake, so we let him replace, but 2 Kobold still perished, so it didn’t hurt the heroes much. She ended her movement on an encounter market, which a dagger to the head of Kobold was inevitable. We decided to move up cautiously because the Master Hellhound was right behind the door and we didn’t want the OL to open it up and hit all 4 of us. So Landrec took a Guard action, with his remaining half action, attacking a Kobold on the west side of the unopened door from Zyla using Spirit Walker. Tahlia took a Ready action, moved up to the corner, but was Thrown into a pit, then readied a guard order. Kirga did the same and moved right behind Tahlia. During the OL’s turn he spawned a Dark Priest along with his Master behind closed doors to the east. The OL saw his chance and opened the door with his Ferrox standing just east of the door, to have the Hellhound march in and Breathe on Zyla, Kirga & Tahlia. Well this is what the heroes planned for, with 3 guard orders Landrec went first because he had the best shot to kill the Master in 1 hit. MISS! Ok, well, we still have Kirga with Ripper, gets the Hellhound to 1, bummer for the heroes, the OL rejoices, as he does 4 damage pierce 3 to the 3 heroes, severely weakening Zyla (at 4 wounds) and Tahlia (at 7 wounds), Kirga finally got scratched taking 3 damage (-1 from shield). From there Steve made an attack with the Dark Priest, which missed his intended target, but still collecting threat. At this time we ruled that the OL got threat even though it did not get enough range, although I did not agree. I come to find out today that the ruling was incorrect per the FAQ, and that if it does not miss, the surges cannot be spent. All the other monsters don’t really activate, other than closing the door again. Turn 2 I caution the hero party stating I have a feeling he has a door trap or a chest trap. We all move close to the door, but not adjacent with guard orders. Landrec is still sitting next to the glyph, with a guard order, as he can still attack from Kirga 5 spaces away, if any monsters open up the door. The only monsters that are left are a Ferrox, Dark and Master Dark Priest and the Leader (Ogre with bleed/knockback, 5 armor and 20 wounds I think).
Prior to monster activation, Steve discards a lot of cards to be able to turn over the spawn token, play Gust of Wind and spawn a Beastman War Party. There are only 2 spaces in the way back that can spawn, so a Beastman and his Master spawn there drooling over the thought of 3 conquest of Landrec, while the other Beastman spawns out of LOS to the east portion of the dungeon. We figure Landrec is getting taken out. We don’t want the OL to keep gaining threat from the Dark Priest, so we use our guard order to take him out. Tahlia moves up with her guard order and ends up getting taken down to 1. Landrec gets mobbed by the master first, which, thanks to Ring of Protection and Ghost Armor, survives the first attack, but takes a beating still. The next attack from the Beastman, brings Landrec to 1 or 2, wow, THANK YOU Ring of Protection. Tahlia gets attacked by a Charging Ogre Leader, but doesn’t take much damage maybe 1 but gets a bleed counter. So Landrec and Tahlia, who are both cursed, are at 1 and 4 health, the OL is a bit unhappy, but still has a chance to kill them off; Zyla is at 4, so there are many ways for her to die as well.
Turn 3 Landrec does a battle action to defeat her foes, and just in case there was a miss, Kirga could have moved back to clean up what was left of the Beastmen. Tahlia activates and takes 3 from bleed when he took a hit from the Ogre, takes an advanced action first getting the Glyph (3) then attacking and killing the Master Dark Priest (now Tahlia has 2 curse tokens, please don’t die Tahlia). Zyla opens a Barrel to find 200 gold, then move into position so that the Ogre leader cannot move up and attack the other heroes. I forget what Kirga does, maybe kill the last monster, there may have been a Ferrox standing around, she rolled a miss, but was swiftly rerolled by the Ripper.
OL activation was run away into a corner to save up threat and maybe kill off a hero.
Zyla activated first. She got a feat card that picked 2 OL cards at random and the OL got to choose 1 and put the other back into his hand. One was a Crushing Block and the other was Explosive Rune. He discarded the Explosive Rune. Rut Roh, Crushing Block can kill either Zyla, Tahlia or Landrect right now. I take a run action open up the chest, getting a potion, 250 gold and a treasure! We found 2 treasure cache in a row getting a power potion and invisibility potion, so we got a fatigue potion for Zyla. The treasure that was found afterwards was the Shillelagh, which was given to Tahlia. Zyla ended her turn on an Encounter Market, hitting the boss after a feat card down to 2 Wounds. Luckily Both Tahlia and Landrec finished their moves adjacent to a Glyph, so guess where they went, to the Temple! Kirga had a rest order, to prevent spawning, as she was going to be the one going into the portal. With 5 armor and 20 health, we didn’t want to take the chance of another undying roll, so we waiting for Landrec. OL just collected threat again. Landrec announced an advanced action because he had to come back through the east Glyph and fired from Zyla using Spiritmaster, but missed (doh). Zyla ran, got the last gold pile and got close enough so Landrec didn’t have to spend any additional surges on range (not that it mattered much, the leader was at 2 wounds and 5 armor). Tahlia healed up again. Same thing for the OL collecting cards and threat, hoping he has a chance at taking Zyla or Landrec out and reluctantly passes. This time Landrec battles and kills the Leader (4) +1,000 gold. Zyla runs and opens up a barrel netting 200 gold. Ok the last turn before Zyla and Landrec hop into town to heal. He collects cards and threat, discards a lot to turn over his spawn token, spawns a Medusa and plays Rage. Unfortunately, it is not enough to take out Landrec. Both of them go to the Temple to heal. Meanwhile the next few turns, everyone except for Kirga heals to full using the Temple and we also purchase the Enchanted Boat and the Bazaar at the Market.
Heroes +7xp – 25 Total, less Bazaar -6 xp OL 0 xp – 13/13 Total
With only 10 minutes left in our play session, we decided as a group to start the game week announcing what we will be doing.
Week 3 Overlord gains conquest [1] and does not buy any upgrades
Sir Alric Farrow moves towards Gate to the North
The heroes talk about what they want to do in this game week. We all have Power Potions and pretty decent gear. The OL is obviously saving up for a monster upgrade, if he has already passed on more LT’s. So we figure it is a good idea to attack Alric now, since he is two spaces away from Talamir. If he flees, we can encounter the dungeon, if not, I am guessing we would kill him. We pass the Morning Star to Tahlia. Travel to Gate to the North to encounter Alric, but we have an encounter of our own on the way up there Tall in Spirit.
At end of session: CONQUEST TOKENS: Heroes: 25-6, OL: 14/14; Total: 39
Player 1 Landrec the Wise: {Spirit Walker] Staff of the Grave, Wizard’s Robe, Ring of Protection, Ghost Armor (Sunburst) 12/12 W 5/5 F; 1 Fatigue Potion, 1 Power Potion, 1 Invisibility Potion, 1 Curse, 2 Feats
Player 2 Tahlia: {Weapons Mastery}; Shadowblade, Morning Star, Chain Mail, (Shillelagh) (Knuckle Dagger) (Axe) 12/16 W 2/3 F, 1 Power Potion, 1 Feat
Player 3 Kirga: {Eagle Eye}; Ripper, Leather Armor (Crossbow) (Iron Shield) 13/16 W 3/3 F, 2 Power Potion, 2 Feats
Player 4 Zyla: {Skilled} Hammer, Wizard’s Robe (Screaming Eagle Staff) 8/8 W 5/7 F, 1 Fatigue Potion, 1 Feat
We messed up on the ruling for the Gold given for dungeon leaders. We finished with 2,925 gold. We went through 4 dungeons levels where I gave 400g for each level instead of 100 (-1,200g). The last level I gave 1,000g when I should have gave only 250g (-750g). In total we should have 975g remaining then. If that is the case, we would not have bought the Enchanted boat just yet. So we will start this next session with 1,975g and no boat. I do not think the prior ruling gave us a benefit as we never really spent all the gold, so as long as we rewound how much was gained, we should be good.
They have 1,975 gold and Staff of the Wild, Bazaar (Talamir Market 3).

Comments: Well, now the OL is feeling very sad. He told us, that he could have killed at least Tahlia if he played the cards correctly, specifically, knocking back Tahlia I think. Oh well, you live and your learn, and we are still learning on both sides. This was the heroes first 3 level dungeon, which was nice to be able to complete on the second dungeon we have explored so far. We are still learning rules. Again I like the fact that we can discuss them as a group and not have just one dominant person laying down the law, although I feel that I do this a lot, since I know the rules probably the best and have a copy of each rulebook next to the toilet for some relaxing reading.
The OL is taking a beating, but that normally happens during the first few rounds from what I have read so far when the heroes are blitzing. I think once he gets to Silver monsters, he will be much happier attacking.

That's not allowed, you can only buy Tamalir upgrades when you finish your week's action in Tamalir (e.g. traveling and ending there or after a training week), not from a dungeon. (Sorry, no rulebook quote handy right now.)
The messed up gold reward shouldn't be a problem as you said, just give it back and play it right from now on . Otherwise you're still in pretty good shape. Keep it up!

ok, so if we end our game week heading back to talamir, we can purchase it then correct?
what we did was end the dungeon going back to talamir, so in essence we just did it in the wrong order?

Hmm, no, wrong order had nothing to do with it. Again, I don’t have access to the rule books but I know this:
1. Tamalir upgrades are bought at the end of a game week (so you cannot benefit from it in the ongoing week). No visit to a specific building is necessary. (You bought them during a dungeon and specifically while visiting the market. Look under “Tamalir upgrades” or something similar in RtL rules.) 2. After ending a dungeon either by escape (to Tamalir) or finishing the last level and exiting through the portal (and returning to Tamalir), no buildings in Tamalir maybe visited. The game week is just over; nothing can be done so no upgrades either. (Look somewhere in the FAQ.)
So you just weren’t allowed to buy the bazaar upgrade. You need to do it at some other time, sorry.

RtL pg21
Upgrading Tamalir If the heroes end a given week’s party action in Tamalir, they can use their growing notoriety to convince its rulers to improve the city. ... The party may only purchase one Tamalir Upgrade card per game week, which takes effect only after all other elements of the party action have been completed. Purchasing a Tamalir Upgrade does not interfere with or prevent the heroes from doing other things in Tamalir that game week (e.g., visiting the Alchemist, training at the Training Ground, etc.), but the effect of the newly purchased card does not benefit them that week.

Unfortunately, one of the people in our group could not make the schedule work for our late night extravaganza 9pm-1am, so we had to call it quits. I am pretty sad as the Heroes were playing well and were getting ready to open a can of whoop-ass on Alric.
The OL was playing well, especially for his first time.
The remaining players decided to start over with myself as the OL. I'm debating whether or not to write reports for it though. I told them I would go balls to the wall. The group is pretty powerful though, I feel they did not make good purchases. It was funny when Okaluk and Rakash got the Swift skill though. The rest of the group is Lord Hawthorne, Runemaster Thorn, Grey Kerr.
I drew from a random draw from 3 avatars, Sorcerer King, Spider Queen or Great Worm. Which I got Spider Queen.
First level they didn't even get through and we finished with 15 ct for OL and 5 ct for Heroes.
