Just stumbled across this game, and it's peaked my interest, so thought i'd ask a few questions!

Firstly, with using lego for the models, does this always have to be the case? Aka, could I use plastic robots from other games instead of lego, or is using lego something that you have to do in order to know what weapons and type of robot each one is? Also, does the battleground and scenery have to be lego itself?

Secondly, I saw someone mention that you need a LOAD of dice for this game, and as someone who doesn't really own a lot of dice, except for craplaods of them tiny ones you get with the Wizkids Pirate game, how many do you need, and how come you need so many?

Thanks in advance!

Using lego pieces allow to have debris on the field: you can destroy the scenery, and also your mech pieces falls when you got hit. This is a really nice part of the game.

Yes, you need a lot of them. Not only, you need colored dice. I don't have the box i made for this game near to me, so i don't remember how much they are, i think you need 3 blue, red and white dice, plus 1 or 2 green and one yellow per mech. Hope that someone will be more precise.
I solved the problem searching for dice sets on ebay. I bought two set of 100 10mm dice, 20 per color. The price was very good, to me.

Thanks for the quick response!

I see what you mean about using lego for both scenery and models, and I think that means i'm going to have to use lego too myself. Unlike a lot of people on here, my problem isn't that I haven't got any, but that i've got WAYYY too much.

As a kid, I loved lego, and I mean REALLY loved lego. So currently I have 3 big oversized blue tubs of lego sitting in a little storage area in my bedroom which I am now going to have to sift through, which should be.... interesting hehe ^^

Dice wise, thats not as bad as I thought number wise, but the whole colour thing does make it a wee bit harder. Time to get searching on various websites methinks!

I think you could totally play this game with something other than LEGO. Now, there are some certain advantages to playing with LEGO, like building creative mechs. But, to just try the game out, you could easily use normal models of one type or another.

And it's very cheap and easy to get lots of dice for the game. I wouldn't let that stop you.

You think that's a lot. You haven't seen my collection. It's still growing. And one more thing. You can NEVER have too many Legos!

I have been gathering pics over the last two days for a post on my blog about playing Mechaton without Lego.

There are links to battle reports in a recent post on my blog. One of them is a campaign game that evidently didn't make it past the second game, but they reported playing the game with 1/144 scale gundam models.

So yes you can play without Lego. It's the dice you can't get around.

You need no more than 2 white, 2 red, 4 green, 3+M blue, and 3+M yellow six sided dice, where M is the number of mechs. Also, 1 red d8, 1 green d8, a d12, and 4+M d10s.

Welcome to the game!

I looked on Anyway, which is Vincent's blog, and in the questions about Mechaton Joshua A.C. Newman mentions using Gundam models instead of Lego mechs.

It helps because scenery can be destroyed if you're using it for cover.

Exactly!

You need a lot due to the way initiative is structured.

I'd say 4 white and 4 red d6s, and 2 red d8s, other than that those numbers sound spot on.

Thanks for the replies all, and also for the advice! Because of you guys i've just spent 5 hours going through majority of all 4 tubs of lego (still got half of one to go) to find parts for making Mechs and I am now in dire need of some sleep

Will keep you posted, hopefully by also adding to the gallery of cool looking robots!

p.s. The nostalgia of going through all my models that were partly complete was such a great feeling

Say guys, I have been looking through the pictures to see what kind of parts I should look for when rifling through all my lego, and noticed that people are making tanks, as well as infantry.

Now i've done a quick read through the rules, and i'm pretty sure I didn't see any rules for tanks or infantry O.o Did I miss something, or are they more for show and the fun of it?

Mechaton is one of those games that seems to spontainiously generate house rules in the minds of its players. Most of the battle reports I have read included some form of house rule, even the reports by the games creator. Eveyone who plays it seems to make it their own.

Many of these house rules are scale specific. The "Car Chuckin" rule is a "Two Plate scale" house rule where mechs can throw cars as projectile weapons. This rule feels right in two plate scale, but in micro fig plus scale where the cars are bigger than the mechs it might feel wrong for the mechs to throw cars like a baseball.

Some games include infantry. In micro-fig scale or micro-fig plus scale it seems reasonable that the infantry could carry heavy weapons strong enough to damage mechs. In two plate scale or smaller it seems unlikely that infantry could play as significant a roll, not to mention the scale change makes movement by foot impractical.

The "Mechs" don't have to be humanoid. In my games if a mech is shaped like a tank one of its attachments has to be spent on armor, and a second on movement.

Many people have come up with the idea of adding different "unit types" to Mechaton. The problem with this comes from the Scoring system in the current rules. The question is do my house rule light mechs/vehicles still count as a whole mech even when I wrote them to have less combat value?

I got around this by writing a variety of alternate unit types into an attrition base campaign game format.

So the answers to your questions are, no you did not miss anything in the rules, and no they are not just for the fun of it.

Hope that helps.

P.S. The games creator has played games where the humans on the map were just civilians caught in the cross fire, and other games in which they were combatants.
