If you have, say just the Danish counter, and you play a card to the board, is it MANDATORY that you move the merchant figure to the nearest Danish trading post counter? Or said another way, if you don't want to move the merchant figure, is your only option to draw two cards? Obviously in some situations, you might not want to move too far forward, but you want to lay some cards on the table. The rules seem to imply that the move is mandatory, in that it says, "The player now moves his/her Merchant Figure...." It says neither MUST move, nor MAY move, but I just wanted to make sure.

So ... just move it. That's one of the tensions in this game to think seriously about your moves. If you have only one counter (say the danish) even after playing cards (sometimes you could gain another counter), but if you have only one counter on your side you have to move your merchant accordingly.

Hope that helps and all the best from germany.

thanks, Berndt, for your reply, which confirms my understanding of the rules. I will always be grateful to Germany for creating and sustaining this wonderful hobby, and I am looking forward to visiting your beautiful country for an extended vacation within the next few years.

Best Regards, Rich
