I had two separate questions that I decided to stick into 1:

1) The Merchant
At the start of the turn, the top merchant ship is revealed to show its value.

If no one takes has the Merchant character, what happens to that tile?

We house ruled it that that the unselected top ship is discarded along with the un-purchased projects.

2) Bart Dias

If no player is hosting Dias, who goes first?

I think that's correct, but see below.

I think someone is always hosting Dias. Check the rules for initial distribution of characters. Depending on the number of players, certain characters begin already controlled by players. It's possible that both Dias and the Merchant always begin with players controlling them. I don't have the rules on me right now, but I think these two are always in someone's possession.

I think someone always has to be hosting these two characters, as they are assigned automatically at the start of the game at any player count, and never return to the board. Either a player keeps them (if they remain unselected or a player selects the same character he already has) or they are transferred between players (if a player selects a character hosted by an opponent).

I agree. The merchant ship will always be hosted as it is assigned at the beginning of the game regardless of number of players.

Yup, this is precisely why these two characters are handed out at the start of every game regardless of number of players, so this situation can never come up.

Interesting! I believe I've been playing wrong.

I've only played with one other person. We were assigned the merchant and the 1st Player guy at the start (as per the rules), but over the course of the game, we switched to the Missionary and Extra Action guys.

So you mean, that we don't actually switch characters from what we were assigned?

Sorry. I thought I understood how this worked.

Character cards move only if a player takes an action to acquire one, in the bottom right quadrant of the game board. If a card does not move in a turn, the previous owner retains it with full benefits from having it.

Yup, you keep them until they're taken. One player can have all four all game long, if the other players let him.

In french rules, by Iello, in the bottom of the page 3 (second set-up page), there's a box which explain the characters cards that should be in play.

Here's the text :

In 2 players game :
-------------------------------------------------------
First player -> Bartolomeu Dias (1st player)
Second players -> Girolamo Sernigi (Merchant ship)

In 3 players game :
-------------------------------------------------------
First player -> Bartolomeu Dias
Second players -> Francisco Alvares
Third players -> Girolamo Sernigi

In 4 players game :
-------------------------------------------------------
First player -> Bartolomeu Dias
Second players -> Francisco Alvares
Third players -> Girolamo Sernigi
Fourht players -> Manuel 1er

Since there is always someone with the Merchant (Girolamo Sergini), there's no question about the merchant's ship. And yes, you have the card (and the bonus) until someone take it from you.

Hope this will help you.
