I have only played two games so it is entirely possible, perhaps even likely, that I've missed something. But to me it seems as though the first player ought to grab all the wood and then build a factory, hoping for coal on his next turn. Likewise, player two would want to grab the coal, thus making it impossible for any other players to build factories early on.
Perhaps this is not the massive advantage it appears to be, if so, what is a suitable counter-strategy for players 3,4 and 5?

It's been mentioned before, and answered by Anthony.
One way to react is to block of the factory tile, and use the convert cube options to create wood to create a factory. (That was my strategy last time I played it at least).
The factorys are not as a big factor as inventions are, espacally early inventions.
(The maximum output of a factory in points are still only 6 (1 point factory + most factorys))
I seen people win games with few factorys.
Another thing is of course that you will run out of money and have a limited posiblity for new money if you buy just wood cubes the first turn and build the wrong type of factory.
