This game has gotten new life for me lately now that my girls (8 and 5) are able to play. I still think it's a pretty random affair in general, with the illusion of having some meaningful decisions (more often than not, the cards you choose are either pretty obvious or pretty arbitrary), but for kids it does have some nice decision-making elements and its fun enough and short enough to be enjoyable, regardless. But we came up with a new house rule that we like, which makes use of the treasure tokens.
When you capture a treasure, in addition to taking the top treasure card, you also keep the treasure token. On your turn as the first player, you may spend treasure tokens to re-roll the dice.
One thing that can be annoying is when you roll something like snake eyes, or a 1 and a 2, and everything slows down because of that. This way, you have an option of re-rolling. Plus, it rewards those who capture the treasures a little more. Sometimes, you are the one who is able to work it out to get the treasures but you get hosed with cursed treasures or get the extra map card or another non-treasure item later in the game when it's not that useful anymore. This way, you always have a little consolation prize, at least.

Sounds like an interesting variant. Thanks for sharing it! I like Jamaica a lot. I bought it last spring but didn't pull it out and learn it until recently. It's a fun time, especially with a larger group.

This game is definitely hitting the table at my house on Christmas day, two days from now. I'm sure my extended family (who aren't gamers) are going to love it.
I'll try your variant and let you know how it went.
God bless, and have a blessed Christmas!

Yeah, by all means, give it a shot. I've played with that rule several times now and definitely like it in there. We've also clarified it so that you can keep one die and re-roll one if you like. A little more control that way.
