Tiny Essen and Spielbox giveaways get submitted as "expansions" to games all the time. It seems to me that the old White Dwarf issues that had new rules, tiles, and missions add at least as much value to Space Hulk as any of the micro expansions for modern Euro games that are in the database. More importantly, I'd really like to use BGG to keep track of what is in each issue, which ones I have, and which ones exist that I do not have.
Accordingly, does anyone --- especially a mod who knows more about BGG policies than I do --- have any reasons why I shouldn't start submitting these issues as separate expansions for Space Hulk? I don't want to waste time on this project if the submissions would not be approved, but I think it would be valuable for fans of the game.

I submitted a bunch of White Dwarfs to RPGgeek that contained RPG info and asked then whether all White Dwarf's could be submitted and they said at the time that only the ones with RPG info shoudl be.
I dissagree however and I thnk the issues of White Dwarf should be submitted and linked to all appropriate games.

I think Rob has the right idea. Its not whether portions of the white dwarf should be submitted as an expansion, but that the entire white dwarf should be submitted and then each game to which each issue is relevant should have a link to it.
Ideally anyways.
But to the the matter at hand, Space Hulk Campaigns covers a lot of the WD content. Might be good to research what content is where before making redundant entries.
The main issue of course is content. Just a new entry for each new mission in Citadel Journal, Dragon Magazine and White Dwarf Magazine isnt going to be worth much more than a purely academic note and with the current policy of no file content for gw games, the expansion entry are going to very thin with info indeed.
Add to that, there are over 120 missions ever published for Space hulk between 1st - 3rd ed. How are you going to arrange them so you arent writing 90 some odd entries? By Campaign. By issue? By Mission?

I don't think that it is unusual for promo expansions to later be included in a compilation expansion. The Goodies Expansion for Agricola would be one example. Hence, even if the WD material was later compiled would not be a reason not to list the White Dwarf issues separately.
I think that each White Dwarf issue with relevant content would be listed separately because that is naturally how people would buy/sell/trade them. Some have missions, some have rules, some have components, and some have a combination of the above. I've seen one site that lists 16 White Dwarf issues with such content. That's a significant, but not crazy, number. As a huge Space Hulk fan, I would be interested in tracking how many of these 16 issues I have. (At one point I had most or all of them before I gave all my 1st edition stuff away.) Perhaps there are a lot more. In which case, it might be too much to be practical. That's part of the reason I wanted to discuss this before I invested time in it. I'd appreciate any information

As far as I can see there are no magazines about boardgames in BoardGameGeek. RPGGeek contains magazines about RPGs. This makes it especially difficult how expansions and variants from magazines could be included in BGG.

Theres a few dozen games listed that exists only as magazine articles or started thus.
Wreck and Voyage of the BMS Pandora being a great example. (Though Im told Voyage saw a actual release on Poland.) Lots of Dragon Magazine games have entries.
I think its more a desire to cut down on the server clutter and a lack of interest in having too much Games Workshop material in the system that might later need to be taken down or severely neutered as last year.

Just to give two examples, Thurn und Taxis: Der Kurier der Fürstin was a small expansion published in Spielbox that is listed in the BGG database and China Erweiterung was a giveaway at an Essen booth that also has its own separate entry. I'm sure I could find a bunch of other Spielbox promos listed as expansions if I spent five minutes to search.

I would only add the Space Hulk stuff if the White Dwarf contained actual cardboard pieces, either pre-cut or punchable. if it is just a scenario with doors that you can copy out of the magazine, I wouldn't upload it as a seperate item but scan it and put it up as a file to the game.

There are plenty. Check in the wargames section, or look up Moves or The General. Each game that has an article in the magazine has a small section on it's page that lists the magazine, it's issue number and the article name and page.
These are definitly NOT expansions and shouldn't be listed as such.

I don't think that every issue that mentions Space Hulk should be added and I think that issues that have only missions might not be appropriate. However, I do think that issues that have new board sections and other components that were meant to be cut out and assembled might fall into a different category. These seem to be relatively rare and more in line with mini-expansions published in the Spielbox magazine.

If a single new card can count as an expansion then I think a whole article with new units or adventures/missions can too.
But again, after the GW backlash of last year. Who knows. If all the GW games pages are still locked down then dont get your hopes up overly.

To be included the cards doesn't even have to be proper cards.
Many of the Zooloretto expansions was made in Zooloretto News, and had to be cut from the pamphlet and stuck to cardboard. For example: Zooloretto - The Chameleon or Zooloretto - The Savings Book. Some of the expansions have later been made avaialbe either in proper print or to download from the net.
Zooloretto News had a very limited print run, so most people will have to download from the net, but it still counts as an expansion.
For Talisman you also find the WD expansions as separate entries: Talisman 2nd Edition - White Dwarf #72 Cards, Talisman 2nd Edition - White Dwarf #115 Cards, Talisman 3rd Edition - White Dwarf #177 Characters and a few more.
So I think you should go ahead and enter all the Space Hulk expansions from WD, there is precedence after all.

First off, as a fan of Space Hulk, I think that it is great that someone would want to take up this endeavor and add something really significant to the database in supplement to this game.
My only word of caution, and I apologize for bringing up a potentially contention issue, is whether anyone can upload anything from White Dwarf about Space Hulk and not violate the GW request/court order to remove their game content. Obviously this is a question for the admins themselves, but it may be worth asking before you start this project if you intend to upload scans of maps, content, etc.

I wasn't planning on uploading any content. I merely thought it would a handy way for Space Hulk fans to track which issues they owned, wanted, had for sale/trade, etc.

You arent uploading SH content even if you wanted to. Check the files section. As of last check its still locked off and isnt likely to be un-locked anytime soon.

UPDATE: Apparently "publications" will be added as a new item type for the database in the foreseeable future. Accordingly, I'm going to hold off on this project until the White Dwarf issues can be properly created as items of that type.
