What are your "Must-Have" board games for your family?
These are the games that you'll run back into your burning house to rescue. Or if the fire marshall stops you, they are the first games that you purchase back even before you collect the insurance money.
We wrote about our Top 10 on our website: http://theboardgamefamily.com/2010/11/10-must-have-family-bo...
Here they are: 1. Ticket to Ride 2. Blokus 3. Settlers of Catan 4. Carcassonne 5. Pandemic or Forbidden Island 6. Mastermind 7. Chess 8. Sequence 9. Chutes and Ladders 10. Boggle or Word on the Street
What are yours?

For me, the family games would have to be:
Scrabble Settlers of Catan Hotels Trivial Pursuit Perudo Pickomino Cluedo Buccaneer Formula-1 Triominoes
Of course, the above would be chosen based primarily on what I think everybody else in the family would like to play. If we were going to base this on my personal preferences, the list would be somewhat different:
Jamaica O Zoo Le Mio Mystery of the Abbey Shadows Over Camelot Hoity Toity TransAmerica Take it Easy Carcassonne Ra Raj
-
Charley Walker
United Kingdom

For us:
Carcassonne Hey, That's my Fish Cluedo Wings of War Connect 4 Heroscape Scrabble Space Hulk Chain Reaction 3 Yahtzee

If you have a family of 4, you MUST have Loopin' Louie. It's fun for all ages. We regularly play it with 4 adults and it's the favourite of many friends.
Another good one (with families of up to 8) is PitchCar.

Standard 'gateway' games that have fallen flat with my family include "Ticket to Ride" and "Carcassonne."
But ones that have gone over well (i.e., play on their own without me, request, or will agree to playing just about any time) include:
No Thanks! Tsuro Transamerica Yahtzee Free-for-All Alpen Express Ivanhoe Maya Madness The "10 Day..." series (in our house: USA, Europe and Asia) Cartagena Finger Soccer Love Pigs Rat-a-Tat Cat aMAZEing Labyrinth Minotaurus Beyond Balderdash

-
Some of the games that have worked for a family of four over the last several years (kids are now 8 and 11):
Zooloretto Pandemic Rat-a-Tat Cat aMAZEing Labyrinth Micro Mutants: Evolution Chateau Roquefort
Games that are favorites of one kid but not the other: Carc and Incan Gold (8yo boy loves these) Ticket to Ride and Apples-to-Apples (11yo girl loves these)
A family game we have enjoyed that is not mentioned with particular frequency on the Geek and recommended if your collection is wanting in the "tangram" genre:
Ubongo

-
El Grande. It is a family heirloom.

Family of 4, 5 with son in law, so:
Crokinole - 4 player Pitchcar - more than 4 Survive - 4 player Leaping Lemmings - more than 4 Thurn and Taxis - 4 player Nexus Ops - 4 player Guillotine - more than 4 Acquire - more than 4 Stock Car Championship Racing Card Game - more than 4 Big Boggle - more than 4
We usually only have 3 or 4 playing at a time, sometimes 5.
These will hit the table over the holidays along with some 2 player wargames, and hopefully at least 1 game of Fortress America.

My four y.o. boy and six y.o. boy are my usual family-gaming companions, and for them the must-haves would be:
Heroscape War & Sheep! Talisman (2nd Ed) Sorry Sliders Mystery Mansion Pocket Battles Blokus Forbidden Island Roll Through the Ages Minotaurus
Of course, for my wife the list would be quite different:
Pick Two Catan Card Game Agricola Carc Word Thief Dutch Blitz Phase 10
Somehow, my wife isn't as entranced by ameritrashy orc killing as the kids are...

The big hits in our family are:
Frank's Zoo (the all-time favorite; we're on our second deck--the first one got too worn out from overuse!) Bohnanza Duck, Duck, Bruce Midnight Party Mamma Mia! Mancala Trans Europa The aMAZEing Labyrinth Rat-a-Tat Cat Snorta!
An honorable mention (it's not my wife's cup of tea, but my kids and I enjoy it): Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie
By the way, I started a recommendations thread on games for large mixed-ages groups (9 players or more). If you ever play games at family-get-togethers, you might be interested in it:
