Thanks to everyone for the great responses in my Solo (?) CCG thread. There I briefly asked about playing a CCG online, but that was not the main point.
So, now it is the main point - I'm continuing my current obsession for finding a CCG that I want to learn and play. Here, I'm looking for suggestions for a good CCG that I can play online for free.
1) Free.
2) A decent fan base with players often available to play. I mean there doesn't have to be 100s of players online at any given time, but I'd prefer not to wait days for a game. Of course, if some are nice to newbies, that is great too.
3) Sci-fi, fantasy or horror are all great.
4) If the physical cards are available for a good price, that is a bonus but not necessary.
That's about it. In my sights right now are Netrunner and Star Wars CCG. I'm unsure of how active these are, however.

Magic Workstation is free to download. You build your decks out of every card produced to date, and there's always someone online playing (though usually it's Standard format - the newest cards only).
You can play other games on it, like the World of Warcraft ccg or Vs., but it's usually Magic: the Gathering players that you'll find.

A friend of mine (who is a former non-serious Magic player) spends a lot of time playing Elements: www.elementsthegame.com. He plays via Kongregate, but the website takes you to the same server I imagine. You might give it a shot.

What's that like now? I played it (and Duels) a good amount before Zynga bought them out, tried once on Facebook and wasn't all that impressed.

I enjoy it. They have ways of getting cash now without actually spending money, so everything is accessible, although slower if you don't spend real dollars.

LackeyCCG has a few dozen CCGs on it. I'd recommend UFS. In my opinion it's probably the most enjoyable CCG I've ever played. All current sets are available on Lackey.
You can also play Magic which would probably land you more people to play with. If you're interested in UFS via Lackey, though shoot me a message here. I am almost always up for a game... if you don't mind playing against the Northwest Regional champ. >.>
The physical cards are cheaper than dirt if you play legacy. Newer ones are more expensive. The game was canceled for a while but has since come back with a new publisher. I don't expect it to last long (nor would I recommend buying the cards) because the new designer is quite terrible.

In contrast to all(?) of the previous games mentioned in this thread, WTactics.org is a truly free one in the sense that it's open source and gratis.
We're a fantasy game and have been around for over a year already, making nice progress with devoted developers around. The physical cards are available for the best of price: Free.
As one of it's developers I'd be happy to see anyone join our quest in it's development. I know you asked for an already completed game with a broad base of followers, but given your other criteria I thought this could interest you, as it allows you to not only play a game but actually be a part of our team and forge it.

This is similar to a post I made on another thread.
A free game that I came across is Hexery. It is very similar to Magic the gathering and can be played for free at http://www.hexery.com
You start with 6 playable decks and as you complete achievements and duels you earn gold that is then used to buy booster packs to gain cards and build custom decks.
The duels are actually playable games and not like some of the other links, where you pick a deck then just watch. I like this game because it is customizable and I can actually play the game. The game is currently in is in open beta and a single player game that you will like.
Other features from their website is the fact that you can view other people inventories and trade your cards with theirs. The online market lets you sell off junk cards and buy the cards you need.
The graphics are a bit dated, and from posts on the forums they are temporary. I really enjoy this game so far and from what I can tell it is still new and the game staff is asking for people to test and report.

Second a recommendation for Lackey! It supports both Rage and vampire: the Eternal Struggle, so you've werewolves and vampires right there. All of Rage's sets are on there, PLUS additional online only stuff.
Rage's standard play day on Lackey is fridays, whatever your local time is.
If you want to give play by post a try, there's usually a bunch of moderated play by post games going on over on the Rage forum, including some that are friendly for folks that have never played before.

Hm. Apparently I'm the only one who thinks Shadow Era feels like a bad ripoff of the World of Warcraft TCG. Also, attackers automatically get first strike for some reason, despite the cards using the same cost structure as WoWTCG?

I haven't played either but it probably is a cheap ripoff. The post above you is obvious spam (the wording tipped me off first, but then I checked and the account was made today) so I assumed it wasn't a very good game. I never trust spam and anytime I see it I assume whatever website/product is being pushed isn't worth my time.
