I found the base rulebook for Flames of War at a half price books near me, and was tempted to get it, but normally if I find it there it means someone is trading it in because a new edition is coming out, but I couldn't find any info on the Rules Versions page, any insight on this?

There are two rulebooks i believe, the original softcover from 2002 and a more current hardcover version. which one did you spot?

I am not at the store, but I am sure it was softcover. Does that mean its out of date?

Technically yes, the 2002 version is out of date. But it is more complete than the 2006 version because it contains the army lists you need to start building your forces. The '02 version actually is a complete game in one book.
The 2006 update has more fluff & stuff and some rule tweaks, but the army lists have been split off into different books ("Fortress Europa" is one for late war). So you need to decide what excactly you want to recreate from WW2 and get the needed army book.
You might want to check out the Flames of War: Open Fire starter set plus a couple of platoons and see what you think.

Ah, thanks for the info! I don't know if I am ready to dive in, I have a pretty large Warhammer and 40K collection, not to mention Malifaux, all sitting unpainted ready to go, but I have definitely been interested, just don't have friends that would play. It would mainly be for me to find opponents at game stores, so having the current rules is pretty important, I don't want to feel like I'm playing a different game or something.

There is a softcover second edition rulebook, which is what is included in the starter set. It is a smaller format than the regular rulebooks for either edition, so if it is a big thick book, it is the first edition. You can also tell by the cover art. The book cover at the top of this thread is for the second edition.

I was almost certain it had the same artwork as the top of the page there, but it was definitely big and softcover. I'll check the copyright date on it next time I'm in there.

And mystery solved, looks like its 2002, first edition, probably not worth getting.

Have the basic rules changed all that much? What are the big differences?
