I'm real interested in Caesar's Gallic War, but from what I can tell it sounds like:

(1) The average playing time is way longer than the stated 3hrs. Is this true? (I like games that can be completed in under 3hrs... with experienced players, of course.)

(2) It's unbalanced and, even with the clarifications/errata, the Germans don't really have much of a hope. I read through a lengthy discussion on this issue in another post but it's hard to get a feel for it without having played the game (and I don't know if I want to buy the game if this is a real issue) -- can someone summarize optional rule amendments they've found help address this?

My own games have all been in the 3-4 hour range. Our record was 2:45. I asked on CSW about this, too, and response I got there was about 3 hours. The reviewer who claimed 6-7 hours sounded like an awful case of analysis paralysis. I think I can say with confidence that the playing time for most people will be short.

I'll let other players answer this, except to say that I think it's going to require some experience to get the hang of playing the barbarians. I had similar feelings about the Scots in Hammer of the Scots until I played it a few times.

Thanks for the insight, Daniel!

While I can appreciate why you might not find it as-is unbalanced, Do you think 2 inexperienced players who used all the Gallic Advantage optional rules and even match? Or might the usage of all those optional rules make it an even match between an experienced player and a novice (with the vet playing the Romans)?

Also, are the rules on the Worthington site the most update? That is, have they been updated (to what I might find in the game box)?

I think if you played with all the Gallic Advantage optional rules that the barbarians would have a distinct edge in a novice vs novice situation. If you were going to play with all of them I would definitely let the veteran player be the Romans.

Last I checked the rules on the Worthington site had not incorporated the changes. You can find them in the "Files" section of this forum, though.

Regards,

Dan

With experienced Gamers, it should be no problem to stay within 3 hours of playing time.
