My main game partner is my wife and so we mainly play 2 player games. The main things that I look for when getting something for us is that its fun, scales well to 2 players, fast and good components.
I have no idea where I got Cathedral. It was a game my family just always had. One day I decided to pull it out and give it a shot and boy am I glad I did.
Gameplay: A good comparison could be made to Blokus. The basic premise it to place your tiles on the board, trying to take up as much space as possible and block your opponent from laying down their pieces.
Two things that differentiate this game though are firstly that your pieces do not have to touch each other. The second is that if you are able to complete a continuous line from one side of the board to another completely surround an area, then your opponent may never place a piece in that region. ANd if they already have one piece in that area, you may remove it immediately. This can make for some interesting strategies and aggressive gameplay.
Components: I have a great wooden version. The pieces are solid and beautifully stained. I don't know why I don't keep it out as decoration, really.
Good for 2-Players: Seeing as how its designed for two players, Cathedral works wonderfully. Its a great 2 player strategy game.
Time: It has been a while since we've played but I don't remember games taking more that 20 minutes or so. We're both fairly aggressive players, though and rarely take long periods of time to plan our next move.
Overall, I give Cathedral a . We're not a huge fan of the abstract strategy genre, but this game really is a gem.

I'm guessing you probably just miswrote what you meant, but a correction just in case:
cphpitts wrote: The second is that if you are able to complete a continuous line from one side of the board to another, then your opponent may never place a piece in that region. An enclosed area doesn't have to touch 2 different sides of the board. Indeed, it doesn't even need to touch 1 side (it could be completely surrounded by a contiguous wall of your pieces.)
Anyway, yep it's a cool game.
Besides a similarity to Blokus, it is also sometimes compared to a light version of Go (due to the territory and capture aspect).

I enjoyed your review and I played this game on a first date! We had a blast and I wonder why I have never heard of it. He says he got his at garage sale from a church or something

I picked this up in a charity shop a couple of years ago and my wife and I have really enjoyed it. My wife finds putting it away afterwards (fitting all the pieces back onto the board so it will fit neatly in the box) to be as much fun as the actual game

Apparently I don't feel the same way. When I opened this while writing my review I found the pieces in a jumble.
