Subject: Same player play both Admiral and Captain? rss

Can the same player play both the Admiral and a Captain?

Let's say that three players, I included, have attacked my merchant ship. I decide to play the Admiral onto my merchant ship. But then one of my opponents plays a Captain onto his attacking ship. Can I then play a Captain onto my attacking pirate ship, even though I previously played the Admiral onto the merchant ship?

I can see nothing in the rules to prevent this. The rules only state that Captains are played onto attacking ships. The rules also say that I can attack my own merchant ships. Thus, I should be able to play Captains against my own merchant ships. And according to the rules, the Admiral is played onto the merchant ship and not the pirate ship, so there wouldn't be an Admiral and a Captain on the same ship (which thematically wouldn't make sense) if I played both.

Um, sure, why not? AS you point out, the rules say you can, don't say that you can't, so I'd call that a pretty solid indication.

Your opponent is wasting his Captain as the Admiral beats him. There's no need for you to play a Captain, when it comes back to your turn collect your merchant ship as the Admiral beats everything else.

I'm too lazy to go get the rules but we played this the other day and I'm about 98% certain I've got this right.

Incorrect.

The admiral has the same strength as a pirate captain, but can only be played to defend your own merchant ship and does not require that you have previously played a pirate ship. To play the admiral, place the card face up on top of your own merchant ship. As long as an opponent doesn’t attack your merchant ship with a pirate captain, you win the ship at the start of your next turn.

I knew I should have actually read the rules before I posted. They're in another room though, almost 20 feet away.

So in that case I guess it would be fine for the same player to play both of them although if you played the admiral without a pirate ship you'd have to play a pirate ship before you could play the captain. If your opponent has played a captain after your admiral then they'll take it on their turn and you wouldn't get a chance to play the captain.

I realize one of the "strategy" is holding to the captain/admiral for as long as possible and force your opponent to play it first. So I guess playing both the admiral and captain made sense.

We were playing the Admiral wrong ourselves today. We only play occasionally and tend to forget the little stuff sometimes.

As posted before, the rules state:

"The admiral has the same strength as a pirate captain, but can only be played to defend your own merchant ship and does not require that you have previously played a pirate ship. To play the admiral, place the card face up on top of your own merchant ship. As long as an opponent doesn’t attack your merchant ship with a pirate captain, you win the ship at the start of your next turn."

"For example, if you play a merchant ship and your opponent attacks with a 4 skull and crossbones blue pirate ship, you can play the admiral even though you have not played a pirate ship first. The admiral would win the ship unless your opponent plays the blue pirate captain on his/her next turn. Then the he/she would win, since the last to play a captain or admiral always wins a battle."

We were wrongly playing the admiral like a pirate. Example: I attack a merchant ship with a 2 blue pirate ship. They retaliate with a 4 yellow. I attack with a 4 blue. They throw down the yellow pirate. I would throw down the admiral for the win. That is clearly not how the admiral is to be played and reading the rules again clarified that soundly for us..
