We have many games we play as a family (me, my wife, and two kids aged 8 and 11). However, there are only a few games my children will break out and play completely on their own. Here they are:

Blink
Duck, Duck, Bruce
Duo
Hit the Deck
Family Fluxx
Mancala
Monopoly
Ruckus
Sherlock
Sleeping Queens
UNO
Wig Out!

With friends and cousins they will sometimes break out:
Frank's Zoo
Thing-a-ma-Bots
Twister

What games will your elementary school kids play completely on their own?

Isn't that the truth, it is hard to get the kids to break out the games on their own. Mine (10 & 15) have been known to take out Quicksand with friends and have also had some rousing games of Animalia without me. Ubongo has been a friend favorite a few times, and was subsequently requested as a birthday present. My oldest once got her friends to play California during a sleepover.

**oops, my oldest is no longer in elementary school, but it is almost even more of an accomplishment to get teens to play games instead of texting people or spending hours posting useless cr%p on facebook***

I am a judge for a children's game award here in Oz. I always vote for games that are fun for adults as well, as I have a theory that kids like doing things with adults more than most anything else. I figure if it can involve the parents, they will be there to regulate and arbitrate the game.

However, on your real question, sorry I have no answer. I only have one kid and he doesn't do solitaire gaming :-).

Thanks for the replies, Diane and John.

I've had Ubongo in my sites for a while now. I'll check out the other ones.

Another game in my sites as a potential game kids might play on their own is Battleball.

My 11 yo plays Ticket to Ride:Europe with one of his friends. He and his brother (9) sometimes get out Heroscape though they don't always manage to complete a game without an argument curtailing it!

My 9 yo plays a lot of games solo, just for the experience I guess: Talisman, Heroscape and Dungeon are probably his favourites.

All 3 of them (11,9 and 5) will sometimes play a game basically aimed at the youngest, of the dice and roll variety.

It's a good question. Of course, they may get games out when I'm not there to notice..............

Oh yes, Battleball is a hoot. I did get that years ago when Toys R Us was just about giving it away. The theme isn't overly conducive to my girls, but when they had some boy neighbors over, it got played quite a few times. Another game that has made a hit is Castle Panic, we have really enjoyed that one, not so much Forbidden Island, which is getting plenty of raves these days.

My boys (9 yr old twins) regularly play Memoir '44, Forbidden Island, and all the new Lego games by themselves.

My 8-year-old son often pulls out Castle Panic with his friends. When his cousins are here (7 and 9), they often pull out Break the Safe, LEGO Creator, The Mole in the Hole, or Quicksand,

Just curious -- do you have a hunch as to why Forbidden City didn't click so much with your family?

As for why Forbidden Island didn't win over that strongly, I'm not really sure, as I like the idea of it, but maybe with my kids there were too many options to choose from on their turn. With moving your pawn, you never really knew if you were moving it where you should, and then tiles get flipped, and you have to decide which one to re-flip. I can't say we played it a lot to where we might have figured out the best way to do things. But when we got Castle Panic, we just immediately liked it and played it repeatedly. I guess we can wrap our heads around that one easier. Yeah, we are kind of wimpy....

I realize I left a game off my original list of games-kids-will-play-on-their-own.

I don't own this, but we were over at a friend's house last night, and their two kids (girls ages 11 and 9) and my two kids (a boy age 11 and a girl age 8 1/2) totally on their own got Cranium Whoonu out and played it. They love this game and play frequently when we visit my friend's house -- probably around ten times in the past year and a half or so.

My kids would grab most of my games... if I let them. I am pretty anal and they are pretty young, so I don't let them mess with the good stuff unsupervised.

But some recent games they have grabbed and played on their own:

Cloud 9
Can't Stop
Loopin' Louie
Sorry!
Sorry! Sliders
Clue
Mancala

10 Days in Africa

Games kids play on their own
Good question! I have two boys - 5 and 7 years old.
They don't break out games and play them of their own accord very often but these are the ones they choose if they decide to.

Blink
Halli Galli
Monopoly Junior
Blokus Duo
Rat Hot
Loopin' Louie
Catch the Match
Reiner Knizia's Amazing Flea Circus
Mancala
Trouble

I recently picked up Quarriors and Castle Panic, and my kids (almost 10 and 7 1/2) have been playing them constantly. We had a school start delay last week due to weather, and they played Castle Panic for 3.5 hours before school. My son (10) has showed three friends those two games within the last few weeks and they've all loved it.

They've also spent lots of time playing Dominion and Carcassonne; they did a fair bit of Forbidden Island and Pandemic before I put them away, as my son tended to just boss my daughter around and I got tired of the drama. Haven't gotten them to play Ticket to Ride yet, but I think that will be a hit as well once they get moving.

I prefer games with a slight element of education involved.
You can consider customized memory matching games and dominoes from:
