Okay if Die Handler and Merchant in the Middle Ages are considered different games. This and Loco should be as well.

We don't need a split (please not another split) but we could sure use an easy way to create a link to that says Loco! that keeps saying Loco! when the publisher changes the name.

Understood, but when I put loco up for trade it shows Botswana and not loco. I don't own Botswana. I'm aware it's small gripe.

Similarly, I was looking through my collection and saw "Botswana" and got really confused since I've never even heard of Botswana. I thought I misrecorded a play; but then after digging in I discovered that my play was really of Loco and not Botswana.

You can list in the version you own in your collection, and it will reflect the title. If there is not yet a version entry for the version you own, you can submit one in the Versions section.

Naming Conventions -- #2 - 2. Games that have multiple English releases are generally listed by the name of the most-recent English Release. Other release names should be added to the Alternate Name field.

That is an incredibly stupid way to handle multiple game names.
When I search for Loco! nothing shows up. How am I supposed to know it's all of a sudden called Botswana?! That might make sense to someone well familiar with every new game release, but for the average user it it makes absolutely no sense at all.
When a search request is made using an alternate name for a game, the alternate name should be used to represent the game on the search return, not the new name. Otherwise a user is forced to click on every game returned and check the alternate list to see if there is some new game with that old game's mechanics.
For what it's worth, Botswana should be listed separately since it is a game that supports 2-5, whereas Loco! (and its previous incarnations) only support 2-4.

I support collapsing multiple editions into a single entry, but what Tim says makes sense. There should be a way for a user to permanently assign a game to a specific version for his collection, and it would be nice if that version name showed up for him everywhere in the future. At the very least, one should be able to specify a version when creating a post under the game entry, so other users can quickly see what version of the game the person is discussing (or, as an option, leave it blank if it's a general comment).
Even when different editions support different player counts, I think it's theoretically OK to collapse them, but only if it's easy for people posting & commenting to specify an individual edition if they wish to, and that specification should be readily visible to anyone who reads the post.

That does happen. If a user sets a particular version in his or her collection, that version will show in database searches. For proof-of-concept, I just did a search for "Loco", and the fifth item on the results page for me was "Loco! (Fantasy Flight Games edition)" referring to the item that I have listed in my collection. No mention of Botswana.

I support this, and I see this a something that should develop in the future of BGG. The diversity of versions in the database calls for some more robustness being developed in the version entries, and linking forum posts and images to specific versions will help localize information about games and versions to their relevant areas.

But! There should be a EASY way to see all comments irrespective of 'version' - i.e. NOT as the Families are now implemented, showing posts from the various games belonging to them.

In addition names should be stable, meaning the original game name. The Internet Movie Database gets this right, BGG gets this wrong. But it's clear that wrong (the latest ephemeral American name) is what the powers that be want.

Just spent ages trying to find Loco! in the database, so I could print out the rules in English (I received a Scandanavian copy).
Silly rule that prevents me from finding it - hope one day the powers that be make a change to fix this issue (the box art for Botswana doesn't even hint at it being a related game)

It "supports" 2-5 only by saying "2-5" on the box instead of "2-4". Owning them both, I can tell you that the game is exactly the same.

It would also help if an exact match on "Loco" were sorted to the top of the list. As it is, the first item is Nacho Loco, with Loco itself well below that.
