I recently won this game in an auction and I was wondering if there was anyway I could play this with only two players. Is there an official variant in the works?

Nothing official that I've seen.

Having played it, I don't see much reason why it wouldn't play 2 pretty much straight out of the box. It's so tight with 4 and 5 players with so few spots to place your guys, that 2 players would seem "normal".

I'd start at the 3 player setup (3 workers, 3 bonus actions) and adjust from there to fix any shortcomings you find.

Perhaps in the style of Stone Age you should restrict the usage of areas on the board, so that only 1 player can take a particular action during a round (of course with the bonus discs you can always do an action that is otherwise blocked for you). Part of the fun of the bonus discs is using them when you get blocked out and then snatching resources (or other valuables) out from under them. I don't think you want to lose that.
A combination of a certain amount of bonus discs (my gut feeling says at least more than 3, as you'll probably get blocked out a lot more than in a 3-player game with open placement) and area usage restriction could potentially work well I think.

That sounds great! I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

I do not think it would work well with 2 because of the "knock off" mechanic. If you invent something you flat out are not allowed to produce a knock off of that item. It would give the non-inventory a monopoly in its production and would let him produce it at his leisure. This does not seem like a positive.

True, in the original rules you can't produce the 1 fake, but you're still allowed to produce the 2 official inventions of something you invented. You just don't get the board points or money, but you still get the points/money the card gives you (which is always better than the fake one anyway).

And the patent mechanism would still be in place, if you want to get points/money when your opponent builds the fake.

And of course, all of this could be toyed with for a 2 player version. You could give the points from the board for making your own inventions, allow yourself to build the fake for the board points only, etc.
