Hi all gamers. I'm happy to introduce the new Geek of the Week: Timo Multamaki from Finland.
I met Timo in Essen and we start talking about gamers community both in finland and Italy. I was looking for foreign publishers to invete to PLAY: The Games Festiva and Timo told be he was in charge of organizing one of the graetes gamers event in Finland ... the years after Timo visit Modena and PLAY.
I really think Timo could give us some news about what is going on in Finland!
Here is

background
Quote: I'm closing 40, married and I have a son (a 4,5 year whose favorite profession is knight, sorcerer or pirate, depending on the day). I have been gaming actively since early 1980's. I started with board games and RPGs. In early 1990's I found larping (Nordic Freeform larp (More about that : http://www.nordicscene.org/)) and it took pretty much all of my waking hours for the next 10+ years. I founded an gaming association in 1993 and have been chairing that since then, except one year when I lived in USA. Our association has grown, being now probably one of the most active gaming associations in Finland and having members from many countries from Europe, despite being a 'Finnish' association. I found out that Nordic cyber punk games were too small for my taste, so I had to organize something bigger, better and more rock'n'roll. So Wanderer Saga was done in 1996-1998. ( www.wanderer.org) Other alternative larps were done until 2003, when we started probably the most ambitious fantasy larp project ever: Dragonbane. That took over four years, involved 500+ persons and 20+ nationalities. It ended up to be the most expensive fantasy larp in history and recovering the project took a good year or so. We published a book about Dragonbane, which has spectacular pictures and it illuminates the levels of insanity rather well: http://stuff.wanderer.org/DB_the_Legacy.pdfI promised to do my next larp when my son asks me to do so. Even while doing Dragonbane it was evident, that LARP would have to give room for other gaming. I started making Zanziar, my first board game. Intention was to have it done for a dear friend's (and fellow GM) 40th birthday... but it ended up being ready for the 14th birthday of the gaming campaign from which it originates, about four years later than intended. Since 2007, my small team and I have been developing some of my early game ideas into full-fledged playable games I am also an semi-active member of Ropecon Ry, the association arranging the largest Nordic gaming convention every year. As my skills are best used in running the association, that's where I've been mostly helping. On some years I have had the pleasure of hosting our Guests of Honor.

Congratulations Timo! We loved your game The Phantom League. Hope my Components Breakdown Video Review did you proud. Just two questions from me. First, what are you working on next? Second, how does one acquire those cool ships for The Phantom League?

Re: Geek of the Week #280- eridis
Hey all, congrats on making GotW Timo!!
My questions for you:-
1/ Who is your favourite Investigator in Arkham Horror and why?
2/ You say that Space Hulk 3rd is the best miniature based game out of the many you have played. Care to give a couple of reasons why you think this?
3/ Which Warhammer 40K army do you think has gone through the biggest changes since you started playing? Have you always played the same army or have you changed over to different ones?
Have a great week!
PS- Does anyone know why you can't poll on the three claims?

Hello Jeremy,
Drakkenstrike wrote: Congratulations Timo! We loved your game The Phantom League. Hope my Components Breakdown Video Review did you proud.
It certainly did. Thanks.
Quote: Just two questions from me. First, what are you working on next?
Next thing is the Phantom League expansion "Mostly Harmless", which I intend to get out this autumn. After that I have one post-holocaust game in the works.
Quote: Second, how does one acquire those cool ships for The Phantom League?
Those you can get only by ordering from me, directly. We have still six sets left. I know that 55€ for miniatyreset is expensive, but 3D printing isn't exactly cheap.

Quote: My question for you:Can you tell us a little bit more about your rather original hairstyle ?
yep, why not. I used to have long ponytail, but as I have atopic skin (very dry skin) having a lot of hair means that scalp skin would become very dry. That is painful.
So, this 'atypical' ponytail of mine allows having long(er) hair while not having that much problems with too dry skin.

Hmmmm... Tough. There is the obvious choice of saying 'me', but I guess it wouldn't be fair. I believe it would be Jani Rönkkönen with his 'Inquisition' game. It has interesting theme and good rule mechanics.
Quote: 2. How many finnish publishers do you know and do you think they deserve more international attention ?
I think there are about 20 Finnish game designers and certainly they'd deserve more international attention.
Quote:
Well, I was a huge elite fan back in the days. First iterations of Phantom League were done when Elite was new game So it has been in the works for well over a decade. I have never played Merchant of Venus, so it can't have influenced much Actually I managed to trade MoV last week, but it has not arrived yet.

Narlgoth wrote: 1/ Who is your favourite Investigator in Arkham Horror and why?
Tough. I have not played Arkham enough to define that.
Quote: 2/ You say that Space Hulk 3rd is the best miniature based game out of the many you have played. Care to give a couple of reasons why you think this?
Sure. Its production quality is superb. I'd assume no one really has issues with that. But also the mechanics are well though of and missions are well balanced. On all of the missions, both sides have realistic chances to win.
...and I have to say that a lot of the WH40K theme has been succesfully implemented in SH3. And I love that theme.
Quote: 3/ Which Warhammer 40K army do you think has gone through the biggest changes since you started playing? Have you always played the same army or have you changed over to different ones?
Squats have gone through biggest change Since there are no such thing any longer. I have some kind of fondness towards the armies of chaos and Eldar. I have had both armies for a very long time (actually I have two separate chaos and eldar armies) and especially chaos have changed over the decades quite a lot.
Quote: PS- Does anyone know why you can't poll on the three claims?
No, but maybe the admins will figure it out.

Re: Geek of the Week #280- eridis
Congratulations Timo and enjoy your week!
The Geekweeks are fantastic for noobs like me to learn about designers for example, so I'm glad to meet the first Finnish game designer. Even a pearl among many since you eagerly take part in discussions on your games.
I'm looking forward to try the ones you have made and see more
Q 1: Is there any game you are aware of with a proper Finnish juicy/steamy theme? If not, would you be eager to design one..? Please, toss some ideas about what proper Finnish means for you...
Q 2: We know you are a hardworker and a passionate. But. If you were given an opportunity of fully funded 3-week vacation,
- where would you go? - who would you take with you? - what would you do there?
Absolutely all options are possible

Hmmm... I am not quite sure what you mean with juicy/steamy theme in here. Most of the Finnish games are done with themes which are universal, there ARE couple of games which are of Finnish mythology, Finnish politics or other very Finnish topics.

I'd take Lagoon 560 and go to Tonga and great barrier reef. Scuba diving, sailing, sun shine and such. And rum.
I'd take my family and friends with me.

Could you correct it a bit.
My surname is Multamäki, not Mutamäki.
There is distinctive difference between those (both mean something in Finnish).
