I haven't actually come across this in a game (because I've never actually gotten around to playing a game), but looking through the cards I ran into this troublesome combo:
First, a time machine (of any kind) has been discarded by someone.
A player uses a Rewind to play it.
Rewind says to remove a card from the discard pile and immediately play it.
So far, that's fairly straight-forward.
But... Now someone else cancel your action using 'engine trouble'
This says if someone plays a time machine, their entire play is cancelled, and their turn ends.
That's still straight-forward enough...
But then it goes on to say the time machine goes back into the player's hand...
And that's where it becomes confusing. Since it was played directly using a rewind, it wasn't technically ever in the hand of the person that played it.
So... Do you end up with a time machine in your hand? Or does it end up back in the discard pile where you got it from?
All in all, this is giving me something of a headache. The same kind of headache time travel paradoxes result in.

Time machine goes into your hand.
You found the car/train, but it didn't start. You'll be able to play it next turn.

Ah. Of course. XD
That's obvious from a thematic point of view, but I guess I was taking the written rules at face value.
I guess that's a side effect of getting into arguments about a TCG. (I was recently made part of the rules board for a game in the absense of the game designer... So I get to help sort out these kind of unclear mechanics.... Should be fun. >_

I was going to ask this exact same question. Glad it's already answered.

I might suggest that the original poster change the title to something like "Trouble with Engine Trouble/Rewind combo" or something for the benefit of others searching the Rules forum for answers to this exact question, but it's not really necessary.
